You can have my SUV keys when you pry them from my cold green fingers

By Brendan McLaughlin

I’m going to give John Edwards the benefit of the doubt and assume he doesn’t really expect millions of Americans to throw the keys to their SUV’s into a well.  That would pollute the well for one thing. And what are we going to do with a vast fleet of decommissioned Wranglers? Make pop art sculptures?  Edward’s pledge to ask the nation to give up its SUV’s was in answer to a question at a union meeting on Tuesday in Lake Buena Vista . He probably meant that we should phase out fuel inefficient SUV’s in favor of more environmentally friendly vehicles over time.  Not a bad idea, even from a guy with a 28,000 square foot home. Where Edwards gets it wrong is with his statement, “I believe Americans are actually willing to sacrifice”.

Sacrifice is sending your son to Iraq. Sacrifice is rationing milk, eggs, rubber and tin.  Sacrifice is not turning in your Bronco for a Prius. I drive a Prius and believe me, it’s more of an indulgence than a hardship. Forget the gas savings- which are considerable. In comfort, convenience and cargo space, I’ll put my Toyota up against most any SUV on the road.  I moved my daughter and all her possessions into her dorm room in North Carolina in one trip and slightly over one tank of gas. No sacrifice necessary.

At a time when every fill-up goes to enrich  repressive regimes that are directly and indirectly funding the “terror” side of the War on Terror”,  burning less gasoline is simply the  right thing to do. If you have to ferry five kids to school every day, by all means, drive a Suburban.  But fueling up a 6,000 pound truck to cart your lone skinny butt to the mall is the kind of waste that has consequences.  A particularly coarse acquaintance of mine suggests that fuel efficiency ratings  include “Marines killed per mile”- a sick joke to be sure, but it makes a point.

i agree there are so many nice vehicles that are fuel sufficent. sacrafice? americans like i that have to  sacrafice a meal to afford to  take a pill. americans that sacrafice proper care to make a payment of mortgage on 1000 sq feet. or the americans who do not even have a home sacrafice for the ones who have the money to pay for what they never own......maybe edwards should sacrafice a few sq feet for someone who needs it.what about the american on disability who really can not work, but wants to work. sacrafice the edwards would not know about that. her disease. well, so do other thousands of americans with the same disease. PLEASE stop whining edwards and get a job.........maybe he should throw in his keys to his fuel efficent house hmmmmm same thing.

Fuel effecient vehicles seem to be the  "Thing" right now and for many good reasons. However, here are some facts that people don't realize about the Prius.
It takes 30 % more energy to produce the Prius therefore not saving as much eneryg as people think.  And also, the disposal of Prius batteries can take up to 20 years longer to disentigrate, only another creating further problems for the enviroment. I don't hink peopel should rush out & invest in these vehicles, just yet. We need to wait a little longer until the procees of manufacturing is better honed, & skilled disposal.

The answers are Tesla Motors and Hydrogen electric power.  See www.teslamotors.com and www.windhunter.org.

The Tesla battery technology is a breakthrough that gives both performance and range.  Windhunter would provide not only clean electricity, but, on a local level, rejuvenate the Ports on Tampa Bay.

The Tesla people are focusing on their batteries.   Most of the American fleet could be retrofitted, and our reliance on foreign oil ended.  Of course, big oil would support a coup-de-etat before letting it happened, but...........  Wait, the coup-de-etat has already happened, right?  Care to count your vote?

Where exactly does Edwards think all these SUVs will go?  If I got rid of my 04 Expedition someone else would just buy it and drive it since it is still a relatively new vehicle with several years of life left in it.  Unlike Edwards most Americans can not afford a fleet of vehicles that can meet their needs for that day.  I would like to be able to purchase another daily driver that got better gas mileage and keep the Expedition and only use it once or twice a year, but unfortunately I live in the "other America" that Edwards is always talking about.
