Flashpoint

Flashpoint this Sunday: Is tax relief DOA?

The 9 % spending rollback mandated by the legislature was supposed to be a warm up act. The main event would be a "super" homestead exemption, enacted by voters in January that would cut many people's property tax bills in half.  Alas, that happy ending will very likely end up on the cutting room floor.  A Leon County Judge ruled the amendment language is misleading so he knocked it off the ballot. Even if the legislature successfully appeals or draws up another ballot measure, polls show public support falls way short of the 60 percent approval required for passage.

This Sunday on Flashpoint, I talk to Tampa City Council member Linda Saul-Sena and State Senator, Mike Fasano about the prospects of further tax cuts and the price local government will pay if they ever come to pass.  Wayne Garcia of Creative Loafing has the last word on the subject and also briefs us on this week's cover story on "Athletic Supporter", Jim Norman and his determination to build a 40 million dollar ball field in rural Hillsborough County.

I'm sporting a 3-day weekend, so I may or may not post until Monday depending on how much fun is being had.

Courage,

Brendan

Concerning the FCAN U-Tube....I hope you bring up the subject of the sinkhole bill Fasano and Legg intorduced and fought to get passed. It was sneaky and will have an ill effect on the citizens of Pasco and Hernando Counties. Senator Fasano SAYS he is for the people when in fact he is just another politician that is fed by the insurance industry!

I hope the UTube of Mike Fasano and John Legg will better explain what a catastrophic ground collapse is better than they have explained it. Yes, we can save money CUTTING inusurace but that is NOT an insurance decrease. Dropping sink hole coverage is like playing Russian. roulette.

Hi Folks,
Thank you for emailing, writing, and calling our Board of Hillsborough County Commissioners to save Public Access. It definitely sent a strong message to the Commission that many of us still believe in education, Freedom of speech, and support Public Access. There was even packed rooms during the BOCC meetings during the months of July, August, and September where many residents of Hillsborough County pleaded with Commissioners to continue funding Public Access. But the vote came up short to continue funding, when Commissioners decided to put their own interests ahead of Hillsborough County residents once again. This means that residents who live in Hillsborough County will not be able to view Public Access on Brighthouse, Verizon, or Comcast anymore. Second, County residents will also not be allowed to produce shows, or take classes. That's right. The Commission could care less about education, and freedom of speech. This is pure discrimination against residents who live in the Hillsborough County. Cable companies such as Brighthouse, Verizon, and Comcast have all stated that their hands are tied, and they have to go with whatever County Commissioners decide. While at the same time each cable company stated that they will still support our freedom of speech, and education. So if these cable companies believe in freedom of speech and education, then wouldn't they speak out on behalf of their cable subscribers and give the County channel back for Public Access? No, because these cable companies have worked a sweet deal with these Commissioners. The County Commissioners cut funding for Public Access so these cable companies would have a freed up channel for whatever they wanted to put on it. These cable companies can then turn around and make a profit from future advertisers. In return these cable companies as a good will gesture at cable subscribers expense have decided to give funding towards Jim Normans sports complex. So how do you now feel about how our County Commissioners silencing our community as far as freedom of speech, and education? How about County Commissioners receiving donations from these cable companies at cable subscribers expense? How about the irreversible damage this would cause to our environment/eco-system when this sports complex is built on a new proposed wetland at tax payers expense? Once again The Board of Hillsborough County Commissioners do not care how residents feel because all they care about is building Jim Normans sports complex so they can make a profit. If your upset as some of us tax payers, and cable subscribers are then take action into our own hands. Contact the Federal Communications Commission and let them know exactly how you feel about Brighthouse, Verizon, and Comcast increasing your rates for cable service in order to give donations to the County Commissioners. At the same time contact Governor Charlie Crist to let him know what Commissioners are doing with your tax dollars, and how they are funding their own campaign, and killing our environment, and natural resources. At the same time get registered to vote, and vote for someone who believes in freedom of speech, and education.

Really enjoyed the Flashpoint today (30 Sep). Several excellent issues, including discussions of the proposed change in home taxes which appears "on Hold" now.  I agree that for any normal person, it is extremely hard to project how this will play out - too many variable, too many assumption.  I find the current "Save our Homes" approach to be comforting -- I feel protected by the 3% cap, and I feel no sense of comfort (or trust) that any change will provide a similar long term protection.

I also really appreciated the discussions about the education channel.  The executive director was extremely well spoken and convincing.  makes me want to reach into my wallet and send her a check for a $100,000 or so.  Unfortunately, I don't have those resources, but I certainly hope our local government continues to support this worthwhile effort, to include using my tax monies for it.

I enjoy your program and your openess to reality. My book is a true story about the sex offender issues and the untruths. I am an innocent sex offender victum of the system and the violations of the 8th amendment. Laws which are passed to protect our children are really doing more harm than good. My book covers three sections-first my story--next spiritual guidance and the church and lastly a guide to help adults avoid falling into the pitfalls of our legal and political system. I am working closely with hernando today news here in spring hill( kyle  martin). Your viewers could get a lot of insite and truth if you would allow me to talk with them.
