Flashpoint

Flashbreak this week

By Brendan McLaughlin

Thank you all for the lively feedback on Sunday's interview with Pastor Paula White. Considering the size of her congregation and the popularity of her books, tapes and seminars  I was surprised more people didn't come to her defense.  If you missed the interview, we will run it against next Sunday morning at 11:00 AM on Flashpoint. or you can watch it right here, right now.

Just 8 hours after Flashpoint aired, it was fascinating to watch Byron Pitts interview  with Houston based televangelist, Joel Osteen on 60 Minutes . Pitts' questioning covered much of the same ground as the Paula White interview, but said almost nothing about how he spends the millions of dollars in tithes and offerings.  The resulting portrait of Osteen was actually quite flattering.

I'm burning some vacation time this week and will try to keep away from the keyboard as much as possible. My colleagues at ABC Action News may be posting some items, so check in once in a while. Catch you next week.

Mr. Brendan McLaughlin:
Thank you so much for bring to "light," how manipulative this woman is.  I don't even want to grace my fingers to write her name.

I don't even live in Florida; however, I came across this via, "YouTube."
I decided to look up your site directly with the link they provided.

You are the one to be commended! My hats off to you Sir.  You tried you level best to bring clarity to her lifestyle through her own words, (which she refused to submit).

She is the biggest "religious" scam artist, and I would hope people take the scales off of their eyes and see this woman for who she really is.

Thank you once again, for your enlightening revealing interview to expose the dark side of one's selfish ambitions in controlling helpless individuals minds.

Why can't she just say "The church pays me X dollars"?   Because she KNOWS that information is incriminating and her brainwashed followers will buy all her spin and say, "ooooh, shes sooo transparent".  What a scam artist!  She should have her own mind control show on A&E after Criss Angel.

I really don't care if a person is divorced or if I disagree with their ideas if they really help people but this woman makes a career out of using God to extort the vulnerable ( just check out some of her quotes on her shake-down shows and TBN appearances) and doling out promises that God will prosper them financially 100X when they give to her.  When has she ever said, "Send in your best offering now and God will return it 100 fold by teaching you to be content while poor!"

And these "ministers" attributing their wealth to their for profit ventures?!  They achieved their fame and fortune off the backs of their POOR followers and channeled that into their "for-profit" businesses (no Paula, your members are not primarily rich and you KNOW that). Highly questionable esp. for a clergy member that is committed to following in the self-denying footsteps of Jesus.

And to tell people that GOD will prosper you in your marriage and every way if you give and THEN divorcing based on "lives going in separate directions" without apologies or explanations to her followers?!
To call her a hypocrite is too kind.

Brendan,

I found your interview with Pastor Paula White to be a refreshing piece of journalism. I'm so very frustrated by this veil of immunity these evangelist types are provided in the name of God. She fully intended to use your platform to promote her book, bankroll her lavish lifestyle and espouse all that's right with her holier than thou rhetoric. You held her accountable for her actions and unwillingness to come clean on her financial expoitations and personal hypocrisy. Why is our public so gulable and why aren't more journalists asking the types of questions you posed yesterday?

You've got a new viewer in me.

Before this week I didnt know who PW was or cared, but after getting an "inside" glimpse I have to say im stunned, sickened and amused all at the same time. Its really more bizarre than anyone really knows. I think "Balls without walls" is more appropriate here. Im thinking of getting into this game. Maybe call myself Reverend Dollar Bill. I swear I could pull it off and I know there are enough "sheep" out there to fill out a nice fat flock. Nah, couldnt keep a strait face. I'll just stick to an honest line of work like writing rap lyrics.
