Flashpoint

When "Bad News" doesn't begin to describe it.

By Brendan McLaughlin

The report of a robbery in which two young women were doused with gasoline and torched was ghastly enough. The two employees of a Nationwide Insurance office  in Lake Wales apparently didn't have enough money to satisfy the suspect, so he sent them to the hospital with burns over most of their bodies.  Then the details came in and the story defied the stoicism and gallows humor that newsrooms engender. A witness described seeing the women fleeing the building with their clothes and skin burned off. One of the women was six months pregnant and went into labor after the attack. We were all sickened by it, but one of our otherwise focused  young producers seemed particularly rattled. No wonder- He's human, and the husband of a young woman expecting their first child.

The suspect, Leon Davis Jr. turned himself in. We'll find out more about all this,  knowing the story could get worse yet.
