Bubba's Back

Attachment: bubba.jpg (2656 bytes)

Like it or not, The Love Sponge is back on local radio. In addition to his afternoon drive time show on Howard Stern's Sirius Satellite Radio channel, Bubba "The Love Sponge" Clem returns to free and local radio January 8th. Cox Radio's 102.5 "The Bone" will feaure Bubba from 6 to 10 am weekdays. He'll also be simulcast on a Cox station in Jacksonville.

The tricky part for Bubba will be to purge his schtick of sexual and scatalogical material in the morning and then go back to his unexpurgated material in the afternoon. The 10 second delay dump button will be close at hand.

Some will wonder why I'm featuring Bubba on Flashpoint. The easy answer is that he has made and continues to make news. In 2004, he drew a record breaking fine from the FCC and spent two years unemployed before Howard Stern came to his professional and financial rescue. Bubba is also a smart and engaging personality however you might disapprove of his radio act. I also maintain that Bubba The Love Sponge makes the list of the top five most famous Tampa Bay Area people- everytime. How would you round out that list? Email me at bmclaughlin@wfts.com and I'll post it in the comments section.

This is the perfect mental exercise to demonstrate how little fame means. So many really important people aren't more commonly known than Bubba TLS.

Clem has craftily branded himself with a moniker that sticks in people’s brains even though many don’t really know what he’s famous for. But that doesn’t say anything important about him — nor about us.

Still, I don’t like to see you (a thinking Tampa man!) list The Sponge as one of your top 5 most famous people in my hometown. Here’s an attempt to bump him off your top 10:

• George Steinbrenner
• Tony Dungy
• Jon Gruden
• Lauren Hutton
• General Norman Schwarzkopf (Stormin’ Norman)
• Connie May Fowler
• Tim Dorsey
• Winky Wright
• Lee Moffitt
• Lee Roy Selmon
• Roger McGuinn
• Charlie Crist
• James Rosenquist

I’d bet most of these names are known by more people than Bubba. Their fans don't all live in Tampa, but they should still count. Besides, “most recognizable name” isn’t your only criterion, is it?

Connie May Fowler has a much larger audience than BTLS. Roger McGuinn could sell more copies of an album, or draw more people to a concert than Bubba. Lee Moffitt is much more of a Tampan than Bubba, so he should get extra credit for that in any list of Tampa’s famous. And even though Rosenquist lives in Aripeka now, he’s done more work in Tampa than Bubba ever did.

Also, there are other infamous people around here — some of whom I’d rather see on your list than Bubba. Maybe Bubba looms overly large in your mind because he’s a media personality, and you’re in the media biz?

Excellent list, Mariella. To clarify, I would use "famous" and "most recognizable name" interchangeably. Some hugely famous uthors including Tom Clancy have much more name recognition than face recognition, but that doesn't detract from their fame. Bubba has both of those in almost equal measure. And I doubt the number of people who've read Ms. Fowler's work exceeds the number of people who have ever listened to Bubba over his career in radio.
