Barack Attack on the web

It's pathetic that it's even necessary to debunk such a blatantly hysterical and racist rumor, but I've heard from too many people rattled by an email claiming Barack Obama is a radical Muslim who refuses to observe the Pledge of Allegiance.  The viral email slur cluttering inboxes everywhere expresses dismay at how the Senator from Illinois threatens to sneak into the White House for the glory of Allah.

I understand why amoral political enemies would wage this kind of attack, but I'm not sure why are so many of us are eager to forward these lies on to others without considering the source.

My recommendation? Run it by snopes.com for a reality check. Most every internet urban legend I've encountered is examined there. Snopes may not be an all-knowing oracle, but the authors appear to be relatively diligent and impartial.

Maybe that's the genius of these misinformation campaigns. The claims are so absurd that the mainstream media never bother to debunk them.

The people sending these emails amongs themselves were the same people sending around the "Dean Flip Flop Syrup" graphics in late 2003, or they were the ones sending  around the emails where Oliver North supposedly told Al Gore during an Iran-Contra hearing that Osama Bin Laden is "the most dangerous man alive".

Politics aside for a moment, viral chain emails are pollution much more than they are informative.  You can still receive emails that are nearly 10 years old warning you about certain virus threats that are fake, or certain web sites not to surf to unless you want a virus.  All it takes is someone who doesn't know much about any given topic (be it computers, be it current events, or in this case - politics) and an email account and friends who send you such things.  The chain never gets broken.

Snopes is an excellent source to have but it's sad to realize that most people busy forwarding emails like the Obama attacks...  They've never even heard of Snopes and have other things to do besides actually research turth behind anything that lands in their email inbox.

Please REPLY to Obama email attack!  Even if you don't intend to vote for him!

If you have received the slandering email about Obama, send the following email (or your own version) back to the sender, and to any addy in the cc: or the text of the email:
______________________________________________________

You have sent me this email which is offends and frightens me, and which is simply wrong.   It states - falsely - that Barack Obama is a radical Muslim who is a threat to America.  These and other erroneous allegations were made by some cowardly and hateful scoundrel who has no understanding of, nor respect for, true Christian values or American ideals.  If you go to www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp you'll find all of them refuted.

I'm assuming you forwarded this nastiness on to me, and our friends and family, out of ignorance, not with any malevolent intent.  I'm also assuming you will make it right by acknowledging your error and sending an apology to me and to everyone else to whom you have passed this poison.  And I am asking you to forward this email, or one similar to it, to whomever sent the offensive email to you in the first place, cc:ing it to everyone else who received it.

Cripes, I finally got one and you know how bad it is?  It claims that Snopes has proven everything factual.  Trying to head things off at the pass while attacking with hatred and bigotry those that are different from themselves.

I  replied, of course, quite fed up and posting the actual link to Snopes....  I replied to all in the email so I expect some knee jerk reactions by people who buy into this garbage and defend the lie.  Still, I just had to stand up for the truth.
