Flashpoint

Citizen Soldier, Michael Scionti

Attachment: OperationIraqiFreedom01200.JPG (142673 bytes)

This morning on Flashpoint, you'll meet a remarkable public servant who put his country above his career, his politics and even his life. Michael Scionti who grew up in West Tampa has been a social worker, a reserve sheriff's deputy, a criminal prosecutor and a Captain in the Army reserves. Six weeks after being elected to the State House of Representatives, Scionti was called to the middle east for active duty- for the fourth time.

How does Michael Scionti feel about the bumper sticker patriotism on display these days?  What does he think about John McCain's suggestion that U.S. forces could be in Iraq for 100 years? And does he believe Abu Graib was a systemic failure of training and discipline or the malfeasance of a few bad apples?  I ask those questions and more on Flashpoint this morning at 11:00 on ABC Action News.   Let me know what you think.

I have been a faithful viewer of your show and was so interested in the interview with Rep Scionti...a bright young Democrat...of which I must admire his thoughts on how to present himself...on the otherhand I believe you created such bias by showing those Dems who fought or were attached to the military and on the Rep side those that did not.  Why not show equity comparisons..the top of the ticket is attached admirably to the military and those folks on the left side had no interest and ran from their responsibility.  I for one will not watch not only your show but that of ABC in the future ever.

An admirer of Rep Schianti but certainly a huge disappointment in how you created bias and slanted your information of committment.  Shame on YOU

Judy asks for equity comparisons, and here it is.   Republican leadership, with the exception of McCain, has avoided "responsibility" to a greater degree than Democratic leadership.   There are something like three Republicans in our national legislature who have worn the uniform, while there are dozens of Democrats who have done so.   One sitting Democrat won the Medal of Honor, and another, Bob Kerry, retired in 2001.
The Republicans are good at calling Democrats weak and themselves strong, but Republican strength turns out to be uncontrollable defense spending which lines the pockets of their contributors.   When it comes time to put their own money where their mouths are, they follow Vice President Cheney's lead and avoid duty to the best of their ability.  The argument that the spending provides security is belied by boondoggles like the 10 billion for the star wars deployment, which never was proven to actually work.
It turns out that the security the Republicans claim to strengthen is their own career security.

Brendan, loved your show this morning.  Rep Scionti is clearly a rising superstar in the Democratic Party.  I am so proud that he is from our community!  He's got the right stuff.  Too bad he's not running for President!

Your comment regarding prominent democrats who've served in the military vs. prominent republican who haven't was a partisan hit piece if I ever saw one.  Let's name some prominent Democrats who never served in the armed forces, like Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, the list goes on and on.  You even listed Rush Limbaugh.  Well, let's put some liberal hit men in that list.  Bill Beckels, Chris Matthews, James Carville.  I have to believe that with the journalism education and writing experience you have in your career, you can make a point without being a partisan hack.  That kind of partisan nonsense lends credance to the words of Rush Limbaugh when he says that the alphabet stations are nothing more than the mouthpiece of the Democrat party.  I give Rep. Scionti much credit for not falling for your attempt to politicize a non-political subject.  We are Americans first before Democrats and Republicans.  People of both ideologies can serve or not serve and still be good American citizens.  So, shame on you for intimating otherwise.

Liked your interview with Rep Scionta.  Sometime ago you had a young lady on who was a super delegate.  I admired her forthrightness on her belief as to what the role of a superdelegate was and her refusal to acknowledge any public bias.  Will you give me her name or a copy of her articipation in your show?  I am aconfirmed and voting Democrat since age 18 in World War II ande the only time I voted Republican was for General Eisenhower.  It is very erritating to see superdelegates publicly endorsing condidate before called upon by the DNC or at the convention when called upon by it. as my understanding is the same as your aforementioned guest.  I was very much moved by her understanding of her role and applauded her.  In fact I am preparing an Op Ed piece for the NY Times and the WSJ, which I read daily, on the subject.  Jim Carter (813) 286-0446.

PS.  I became aware of you as I watch the following Chirs Mathews Show. Now for some time I try to get home from church in time to watch you as well.  It is the only local show that I watch!

I expected to take heat for pointing out the striking difference between military service between the best known Republican and Democratic party leaders.  I raised the distinction not to trash Republicans, but to explore the connection, if any, between a politician's own military experience and their eagerness to send others into battle.  It was, after all, a Republican led civilian command structure that sent Representative Michael Scionti into harm's way.

To Rich Suggs:  I heartily agree that there are many ways to serve one's country aside from military service. My point is that those who plan, support and in some cases deceive in order to send young people to risk their lives might be held to a higher standard.  Ted Kennedy, by the way, served in the Army from 1951 -1953 and lost an older brother in WWII.

Jim Carter: My superdelegate guest was Janee Murphy. You can watch the segment at abcactionnews.com/flashpoint. Click on the February 17th show.

W. Grohne: The closest I've come to military service was an afternoon of paintball about a year ago.  I don't question those who have not served. I do question those who urge others to serve, yet do not serve themselves.
