This Morning on Flashpoint: A Rorschach test on a pulpit

Attachment: Wright.jpg (24870 bytes)

Some look at Barack Obama's former Pastor, Jeremiah Wright and see a truth-telling father figure. Others see a race baiting paranoid. What explains the difference?  That's what we try to explore this morning on Flashpoint.  Local Pastor, Arthur Jones Jr. of the Carrolwood Bible Based Fellowship Church is my guest, but if you think he's going to reject those fiery snippets of Wright's seen on YouTube, you'll be disapppointed.

Let me know what you think,

Brendan

Brendan,

I'm watching your interview with Rev. Art Jones, and I must say it was a great interview.  You asked important questions about this important issue on race.  Rev. Jones was articulated and well-informed in his response.  I'm a black man I hate this entire media created story.  Sen. Obama has never articulated the type of speech that his former pastor used.  So why should he be held accountable?  I can never believe that Sen. Obama is a racist.  He is of mix race, both black and white.  That is why he is able to rise above the politics of the past.  I will can't wait to cast a vote for him.  Brendan I will continue to watch your program, you are honest, direct and fair.

Also Mr. Audet does great work at HCC, as a former student I'm so proud of the Ybor Campus.

I don't agree that the interview was all that good. Brendon gave the Pastor a break on several occasions and, failed to ask the hard questions. He let the Pastor espouse the same "out of context" message that we hear all the time. How can these staments continually be taken out of context. Saying the inflammatory things that were said, whether or not Obama was there, is most probably indicative of prior sermons. Anyone who thinks that this latest episode hasn't hurt Obama"s run for president is fooling himself. Would Dr. King had set in this church and listened to this diatribe or would he had walked in the spirit of racial harmony.

I am 60 years old and for 50 years I have been taught that it is wrong to Judge people in terms other than who they are based on their actions. In my time I have seen that this thinking that I was taught has worked for many people.
I could not understand Black Leaders who kept ringing the bell and saying that the country was racest. Yes, it is there in Missippi and Alabama but I choose not to go there or be part of it. My feeling was that those supposed leaders were in it for the money. When you bring people to fear and hate you gain control over them.
Now, I have been watching the issues and I understand that the problem is that blacks that have listened to their ministers are not trying to do what I have been told to do. They are not judging me based on me but on the color of my skin. So, where is the root of the race problem for today?

Two things:
One, the way that I have been taught is the best way.
Two, if I like eggs in the morning and do not like oatmeal it does not mean that I am wrong. It means that I like eggs and I do not like oatmeal. It is my choice, my choice. To be all that I can be I should try oatmeal. But, in the end, rather than calling me a name for my choice, you should let be just that my choice. When you accept that it brings it into prespective. My choice. I will honor you the same way.

The use of the word "diaspora" by the reverend this morning to describe North America was a rather interesting choice. It prompted me to look up the definition as I had never heard this word before.  Due to the tone in which the reverend used this term, it would make me question how he has used it in the past, and in what "context" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/diaspora

We enjoy this show with the interesting guests each week!

Dave Audet's Ybor Film Festival Feast for the Moving Eye has been a Tampa Bay cultural jewel for years.  This year's Friday night feature, "Taxi to the Dark Side" should be seen by any thinking patriot.

About Pastor Wright;  It seems preachers of all political persuasions manage to feast upon their feet from time to time.  Remember Falwell and Robertson claiming the attacks on 9-11 were retribution, supposedly delivered by God, for homosexuality in America?   The mass media shills who relentlessly crusade to tie Obama to Wright's statements are far more intellectually dishonest then the good Reverend.  The whole affair is a distraction that, unfortunately, will confuse too many of our less gifted fellow citizens.

Go see "Taxi to the Dark Side" in Ybor Friday night.

What is wrong with the Black and White thing in America. It can be very hypocritical when a caucasian says something about Black America,  Black America does everything in their power to destroy that person. Im talking about the Don Imus situation and the linching of dog the Bounty Hunter. How is it ok for a pastor to say the things he said in the black culture and everyone backs this pastor. Due to what happened in the past, a pastors job is to enlighten there parishinors, not show them how to damn a race or country. I believe that's the reason why some people are being so critical about Obama.  When you attend a church, you're going to hear God's word and you enjoy listening to a particular speaker. If you dont like or believe what a person is saying, why do you go? I don't think Obama is a racisit but I wonder why is he or was attending that church? I believe there are more racisit in black people, in America, then there are racisit in white people.

I think it is important to not discount the generational differences between Barak Obama & Rev. Wright.  The Reverend's generation experienced first-hand blatant racism, violence & the rise of the inner city drug culture.  Barak Obama is 20 years younger & grew up in multi-cultural Hawaii & Indonesia.
Having a white mother who was a strong, successful woman spared Barak from the inner city plight experienced by many in this country.  When he returned to the US, Barak went to Harvard.  All of these things make it very improbable that Barak Obama would have hardened racist views.  He didn't live the life, he didn't feel the pain & he doesn't show the scars.
BTW, I voted for Edwards, so I'm not an Obama-maniac. Or whatever they are called...
