This Sunday on Flashpoint: Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd

Attachment: Grady Judd.jpg (11255 bytes)

Grady Judd may be the best sound bite in law enforcement.  This beauty delivered during a newscast I was watching from home nearly made me fall off the couch.   Judd channeled Andy Griffith while describing  crack-addled Adrian  Apgar who had to be rescued, stark nekkid,  from the jaws of an alligator in 2006 and was  recently found wading nude in a gator filled pond- again.

He seems to have a proclivity for taking off all his clothes, getting into the water and putting himself in a dangerous situation. And it's not funny anymore.

Another dryly delivered zinger infuriated a dead suspect's family, but  made Grady Judd somewhat of an internet hero among the law and order crowd. When a reporter  asked why  his deputies fired 110 bullets to bring down Angelo Freeland ( the suspect who murdered deputy Matt Williams and his K-9, Diogi in 2006)  Judd reportedly told the Orlando Sentinel it was because "that's all the bullets they had or they would have shot him more".

I think the reason Grady Judd is so unabashed in front of the camera is  because he knows exactly who he his. This is a guy who wanted to be sheriff at the age of 8 and started working for the PCSO at age 18. See the interview on Flashpoint this Sunday Morning at 11:00 on ABC Action News.

To be honest....I am getting quite tired of seeing and hearing Sheriff Judd.  He apparently craves the spotlight....all of the TV appearances and the twice a week, sometimes more news briefings held for the TV media are a waste of time.  He should be more interested in preventing crime rather than grandstanding as a pseudo celebrity......his public relations officer can handle the media events.

An interesting 20+ minutes with a fellow who definately is not shy.  Sheriff Judd is a credit to Polk County and will be reelected easily.

A couple of other, somewhat related comments:

While coverage of Polk County has improved somewhat over the past couple of years, it still lacks terribly when it comes to stories other than crime.  It seems as though sometimes that there is no news if it doesn't happen beyond the coastal counties from Citrus/Hernando to Sarasota.  It's sad that only two of the four network affiliates (WFLA and WTVT) have news bureaus in Lakeland with (mainly) full time crews covering Polk.

And Sheriff Judd did well in correcting you on one point during the interview.  You pictured Polk County as a mostly rural place, which to many automatically protrays a mostly backward place.  As the sheriff mentioned, Polk has grown by leaps and bounds, with a population now of over a half million people.  Where there are still very rural areas such as the southern area around Fort Meade and Frostproof, much of the county has become --- for good or bad --- more urban and/or suburban in nature.

Make it a great week!
