Flashpoint

Who's your Buddy?

Attachment: Buddy.jpg (18148 bytes)

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections, Buddy Johnson almost agreed to appear on Flashpoint this week. At first, he said yes, but he'd have to re-arrange something.  He's a little gun shy you see, after near daily face pummelings by the St. Petersburg Times over the details of his "interesting" financial dealings. (sample here)   After it became clear he wasn't going to sit next to his opponent, Phyllis Busansky for a side by side discussion, we tried to schedule a separate interview to no avail. We made a date for later in the month. We'll see.

So this Sunday on Flashpoint, you'll get half the story, albeit an interesting one. Phyllis Busansky is a former county commissioner usually described as a "traditional democrat".  She spent a lot of money in 2006 to lose to Gus Bilirakis for the congressional seat in district 9. Now, at 71 after a lung cancer scare, she's tan, rested and ready to join The Times and walloping Buddy between now and election day.

Bonus: Wayne Garcia gives a snappy rundown on Charlie, Pam and Gus. You know who we're talking about. You watch Flashpoint!  This Sunday Morning at 11:00 See you then.

Excellent show as always.   I'm guessing it's a calculated risk by Johnson to forego Flashpoint.   I certaintly wouldn't pursue him, let him get hammered by Phyllis Busansky.  She had every right to do so.  He must have watched the "Just how stupid are we" show and is hoping the only thing Hillborough voters will notice is the (R) by his name.

Which goes to the very interesting point Brendan made about a nonpartisan race for Supivisor of Elections.   Be careful of what you wish for.  Yes, of course this governmental position should be nonpartisan, that goes without saying.   It's a double edged sword though.  At least when you know what party they're affiliated with, you know what to look for.  Remember Kathurine Harris?

Brendan - I think Buddy Johnson would be stupid to come on Flashpoint.  Give him a little credit for getting the feeling of a possible ambush by Phyllis and yourself.  What is the journalistic ploy whereby one side is allowed to make charge, after charge, after charge; and thus forcing the other side to play defense the entire interview?

Oh yes, that "snappy rundown" (as you call it) on the sexual orientation of Gov. Crist: Do you or Wayne Garcia have proof that he is gay, or is this just a rumor you allow to be repeated on Flashpoint?  I'm sure if a McCain supporter suggested that Obama is a "closet Muslim", you wouldn't challenge that either!!!  Are you trying to become more like Keith Olbermann each week?

I dislike Buddy and find almost everything he does childish and offensive but I have to say -- Phyllis has NO chance. Her signs need to be everywhere, she needs to be in the paper every day, I need to be getting mail from her ever week and phone calls every month telling me to vote for her. Without these things, there are too many people in this county who do not know her (and she is a wonderful person) and we will get stuck with Buddy again.  :( I'm glad she is going on Flashpoint but someone needs to politely tell her she better step it up a notch and fast!
