Shallow thoughts as we head into the weekend

-Making sorbet is a great way to use up all those lemons,  limes and grapefruits people keep bringing into work from their backyard fruit trees.  I made this recipe for lemon-rosemary sorbet, today but substituted gin for the vodka. You've got to pick up an ice cream maker, but it's fabulous.

- The AMC series, "Mad Men" is every bit as good as the hype. The second season is underway, but I'm watching the first season on DVD. The 1950's have been fully explored in books, film and TV, as have the  '60's.  But the sliver of time between the square Eisenhower years and the dawning of the age of Aquarius has been neglected until now.

-I think enough time has gone by since the 1960's sitcom starring Shirley Booth for parents to start naming their daughters "Hazel" again. It's a really nice name.

-The story of John Edwards' extramarital affair confession just broke and I'm already over it.

Have a great weekend!

Only the first season of Hazel is available on DVD. They should go to season 2, the first in color! This is also where the name Whitney became popular in an indirect way. The nanny, played by Whitney Blake was the inspiration for Whitney Houston's first name, which later resulted in that name becoming popular in the mid-80's. 1961-1963 are very neglected years in pop culture, sadly, and to a lesser degree, 1964-66. The hippie/psychedelic years are way overrated. P
