Okay. So they post and a fictional ad posing as a married woman, but they somehow assume the men responding are in fact men and also married.

It would seem the folks at the Science of Cheating blog really need to watch Brad Paisley's video...

I think it's safe to assume the respondents are male, but married? At least a fair portion are bound to be perpetually adolescent singles still living in their parents' basement like the rest of us ;-).

Newsflash: men cruise the internet for anonymous sex. Women don't. That women neither need to use the internet to find sex partners or are not compelled to is entirely beside the point. The above research does not even deserve to be called such. The only thing that can probably be returned conclusively is that the dudes that read those particular forums are creeps.

Hi all - it's Marcie, co-author of The Science of Cheating - I really appreciate your comments. We are definitely aware this is not a scientific study, we did try to "control" it as much as possible by posting the ads at the same time of day during the week. We also did throw out emails that were obviously not from married men, but without actually meeting all of them (1400 emails came in from across America) we can't validate them. I think it's still an interesting "look" into the climate of infidelity in America.

We did post a few ads in Tampa and my hometown (Raleigh, NC) again this week, but they kept getting flagged & removed before the 2 hours was up. It seems people are more eager to "police" this kind of activity in light of recent news - which is a good thing. But not so much for our experiment :)
