Just returned from Tony Dungy's book signing in Lakeland. I was stunned by the turnout. Nearly a thousand people turned out to get a book signed. I knew Tony was still deeply popular throughout the Tampa Bay area, but I had no idea how much his popularity slices right to the fiber of local fans. Tony cuts through all demographics. All people -- football fans or not -- have strong feelings surrounding Tony.
Tony proves you can do it the right way. Is he the most popular figure in Tampa Bay sports history? Alstott, Sapp, Lynch and Brooks will always own the hearts of Buccaneer fans. Yet, I wonder if any of them could command the same turnout and total respect that Dungy receives.
