All season long, Jorge Cantu felt like he should be a regular day player while the Rays did not. Today, in the Rays clubhouse after their 3-nothing loss to the LA Angels, Cantu found out he was being optioned to AAA Durham.
Cantu did not take the news lightly. He was fuming. Cantu told me today that he felt the team has made it clear, he is not in their future plans. He wants out, and a chance to play with another team. He may get his wish before the July 31 trade deadline.
Cantu has 72 hours to report to Durham. If he doesn't, he won't get paid. Cantu told me he is non-commital at this time until he speaks directly with his agent and team VP Andrew Friedman.
There is never a good way to tell a player that they are moving on without you. But in this case, I think this way lacked class. Jorge deserves better.
