HEAD COACH JON GRUDEN
"I am very excited about the beginning of training camp. They tell me that we are allowed to hit this time of year, so we are looking forward to that. I don’t recognize Greg Spires, he has a new look. That might take some adjusting to, but we are very excited to get started. We do have a couple roster updates. All I can say is that we have a lot to do; we have a lot of work to do. We have a great group of guys, guys that have paid a great price. They have worked hard and I think they are to the man very excited about the upcoming season."
"It is important. It is a credit to Bruce Allen and Kevin Demoff. It is a credit to Fletcher Smith, but more than that it is a credit to Gaines Adams. He is a guy that told us at the very beginning that he wants to play and wants to contribute. I think for him to be at his best he has to be here. It is something we are excited about, but it is something we did expect."
"We have to see who is on the first team before we make that decision. Last year we had some injuries. There will be some guys that will play more than others, but we will see where we are when that first preseason game approaches."
"We put a lot of emphasis on getting better in all three phases. We have added some players and we expect to get some men back. There are a lot of new faces defensively. There is going to be a new middle linebacker, Cato June comes in here and we expect him to be a heck of a football player. We added two young linebackers that we think will make things very interesting. Brian Kelly was not really ready to go last year physically. Phillip Buchanan was not here. Sammy Davis, Alan Zemaitis weren’t ready to go physically. We have four new corners that we think are going to help us. Kevin Carter, Patrick Chukwurah and Gaines Adams weren’t here. So we have a lot of new guys to work with and if you throw in the two safeties that we drafted that show a lot of promise, there are going to be a lot of new faces contributing to our defensive football team this year."
"We feel real good about some of the moves that we made in the offseason and free agency. We were able to dabble in that a little bit more than years past. We had a couple of extra draft choices that I think will help us. We have been able to develop some young guys. Some guys got thrown into the fire early last year. We had four rookies that started on offense, one was a quarterback, two on the right side of the line and Maurice Stovall started for us. We expect these guys to show tremendous improvement. Some of the veterans that were hurt last year that couldn’t play hopefully are healthy now and can play. We do feel better about having more depth and a better football team."
"I feel a lot better now than I did at this point last year because we have four guys that have some system background. Jeff Garcia comes in here after taking the majority of the snaps in the offseason as a veteran who has played in this style of system before. Chris Simms is a guy with 19 or 20 career starts here. Bruce Gradkowski has 11 or 12 career starts, and Luke McCown is going to be in his third season. Now Luke wasn’t here; he was hurt last year. Simms was hurt last year early. And obviously Brian Griese left us in free agency, so we had a real lack of experience. But I do think four guys with some system background and some playmaking in their background is going to be good for this football team."
"I think Monte is excited because that’s just what makes him unique. He’s a very enthusiastic guy. He’ll coach anybody. He’ll be demanding of his players, and we’ve added some coaches that have stimulated him and excited him also. But we have added some players who are going to allow him to do a lot of different things that he’s encouraged by."
"We’ve got to come out healthy, number one. You’re not going to go in the Baltimore Raven game with three starters on your offensive line in the Milk House here getting treatment. We’ve got to come out of here healthy. We’ve got to come out of here ready to roll. We play at Seattle; that’s not an easy opener. It’s going to be loud, it’s going to be very difficult in a lot of ways. That’s a tough opener for us. But I think our team knows we can compete with anyone. We’ve got to come out of here unified and tight and we’ve got to come out of here executing at a high level and being a physical football team, and healthy."
"Change is necessary. Change, in our opinion, was necessary. We won 11 games two years ago; we tried to bring back the core group of players that we had and obviously that didn’t work for a lot of reasons. We did have a number of key players go down. We needed an injection of youth there. We felt we needed an injection of the free agent market. We were able to do that given our salary cap position. Some of the players that we did acquire I think are pro football players that will help."
"I think it is. I’ve always said that. It’s very hot. There’s no way around that. We’re going to try to be creative and smart about how we go about our business. We’ve got a lot of two-a-days slated but that’s the case every year. We know we’re going to get about six or seven of those rained out and for that reason we scheduled two-a-days on almost every day. We’re going to get our work done and this is a great place. The hotel’s tremendous, the support system here is great and we’re thankful for them."
"That was one of the few good ideas we had last year. There are going to be some guys who are on a very similar training camp regimen as Joey. Not exact, but similar. We just did a lot of research. The big thing is, you want your best players to be there for you for 16 games when the regular season starts. We go behind the scenes a little bit. We try to get an updated file on where the player is from a health standpoint. We talk to the trainer, we talk to the team doctors and we do what we deem is right to get these guys the work they need to be ready to play as football players and also physically ready to roll."
"I’m looking for a lot, obviously. I want these guys to play enthusiastic football. I want to be a faster football team and a more physical one at that. And we’ve got to make plays. We’ve got to make plays. We dropped 27 passes last year; I want to be remembered for the one-handed catch. I want to be remembered for the tremendous open-field tackle. I want to be ready for the big hits and gang-tackling, a swarming defense and things of that nature. I want to get back to that. Obviously, having a deeper, better group of football players, hopefully our coaches do a better job than we did a year ago and it will all come together for us."
DE GAINES ADAMS
"It was very important. The main reason why was just to earn the respect from the coaches and the players. That is the main thing, I wanted to come in on the first day, get acclimated, work hard with the team and let them know I am here with them to work hard."
"I know it is going to be a fair deal. I am not here for that, I am here to just play football. I am going to let all of that take care of itself. Everything is situated and ready to go."
"Most definitely. I wanted to get it done before anyone else and I wanted to be in before anybody else. That is why I am here right now. Fletcher [Smith] and I sat down and came up on an agreement and we got it done."
"The main reason was just to earn the respect from the coaching staff and the players."
"To go out and just help [the Bucs] defense the best way I can. To just work hard and it starts by today being here on time."
"Well, I am not worrying about that. I am just coming in and working hard and wherever Coach Kiffin and Coach Gruden want me, that is where I am going to be."
"I finally get a chance to play NFL football. The money is no issue. I am here to do what I love and that is play football."
"No, just doing the same old routine. I have been working out with the coaches and I am just running and doing the little things I need to do to improve."
"I feel like I am prepared. Coming from Clemson, it gets hot and we have two-a-days. The only thing I have to adjust to is the humidity, but I think I am fine."
"Most definitely, just like coming to college. I didn’t know what to expect. I am nervous and the first day starts tomorrow."
"Being a competitor you have to set some type of goals or standards, but that is something that I keep to myself. I have something set up, but I just want to go out and help this defense and help this team be the best they can be."
FB MIKE ALSTOTT
"There are always butterflies. I mean if you are a football player and you love the game and you love to play football, you’ve got to have those jitters. You have to have those butterflies and you have to be ready to play football. That’s the bottom line. You’ve got to be excited to be here. It’s a grind, you know, it’s getting involved and making that transition from being healthy and feeling good every time you wake up to, now you got to get used to hitting every day and waking up with soreness and everything. But after the first 10 days that pretty much goes away and you start playing football and having fun. It’s a grind right now but everyone goes through it and you’ve got to go through it if you want to be successful."
"That’s why I don’t go to the dentist. But, it is what it is. This is what we do for a living, this is what we’ve been doing since we were how old. I’ve been doing this since I was seven years old, so I couldn’t imagine not being here right now. And it’s going to be a hard transition sometime down the road when I decide not to be here. But I’m here and the rest of the team is here, and I’m anxious to get going especially after what happened last year. But we have turned that page and started a new chapter."
"It was a process between Bruce and I and Jon and the Bucs and figuring out what the situation might entail as far as for me and for them and it all came together and we had a great offseason. But when you are on a one year at a time contract you never know what’s going to happen. You never know what direction they are going to want to go in or what direction I’m going to want to go in. But after sitting back for a couple of weeks, I knew that fire was still burning inside me that I wanted to play football and I can play football so that’s why I’m here today."
"My expectations are to contribute and help this ball club. To go out there every day and lead and contribute to W’s on Sundays. Everybody knows I’m a situational player. When you’re down by 10, 14, 21 points, my role changes a whole bunch and I’m pretty much on the sidelines. You go to one back, full wide receiver sets and there is no room for me. But it’s been proven that if we put up the points and control the clock that I will be involved in the game and contribute and make the plays that help us win on Sundays."
"I truly believe so. You always want your players back from year to year so you can reunite and obviously feed off what we did in ‘05 and try to do it in ‘06 and it didn’t happen. But we do have a lot of competition among us position-for-position all across the board, and I don’t think anyone knows that they are locked in their position. It’s going to drive a lot of people and make a lot of people better and it’s going to make this team better in general. I think that competition always helps."
WR JOEY GALLOWAY
"I think so. Coach Gruden, we talked briefly about it earlier in the week and I think he’s going to make sure I get to the game."
"I think the group of receivers here is probably the best that I’ve played with in my career. You know, when we go to our meeting and look around the receiver room, there are a lot of playmakers in the room, we have some guys that have been around awhile, like Ike Hilliard and myself, and we also have some very good young talent that’s coming on and we expect everyone to contribute, make plays and help us win."
"It’s tough at times just going through mini-camps, but I think the first thing that stands out is that he’s a competitor, he comes to work every single day, when he’s in the huddle you can tell that he’s locked in and he’s focused. When you look at a quarterback, that’s the kind of guy you want, a guy that will get in there and be a leader, compete and go after it every play."
"I think that if there’s something Coach Gruden is very good at, it is bringing a group of guys together and then finding their strengths. I will do whatever is asked of me to do, I have every confidence that Coach Gruden will put the right plays in, bring the right situations and get the right matchups so that Jeff will be successful, I can find success and whoever else in the offense can find success. I’m not worried about it. There’s talk about him not having the strongest arm in the world. I’ve played with what it feels like has been 100 quarterbacks in my career and some of them had a strong arm and some of them didn’t, and we’ve been able to be successful with different types of quarterbacks, and I expect to be successful with Jeff if he’s the guy who starts."
"I just saw one Michael Clayton on with a tight t-shirt on, looks like he’s ready to go to me. Tomorrow we will see, but I think the consensus is that everyone’s excited about Mike. He’s worked really hard and he looks good and you know as far as Mike’s concerned, he’s going to be at work tomorrow, he’s going to be ready to go and we’ll look forward to it and hopefully he’ll stay healthy."
"That has been fun actually, to watch the team play and to get emotional and just let the emotions go. When you’re playing, you kind of have to keep your head, you have to think through things, you have to run plays, you have to come back to the huddle and refresh, but when you’re sitting there watching a game and cheering for a team you get to let the emotions go, and that’s something I like doing."
