Before you get all cranked up about the USF Bulls receiving the #2 ranking in the first BCS poll...we have to remember a couple of things.
First and foremost, this is a long process and the sole purpose of the BCS is to have one team standing after a complete college football season and all the bowls. We forget that every season the BCS has been the system, there are ebs and flows that always bring controversy. That may be the only beauty of this system. It forces attention. It forces opinion.
The big news in this first BCS poll of the season is not that the Bulls are rated #2. I believe it shows that if the Bulls win out...USF will be in line to play for a national championship. I don't believe that was a given before this first poll. It shows that the BCS and the computers have respect for the Bulls' wins at Auburn and at home over #5 West Virginia. It also shows the BCS has respect for the Bulls' entire schedule. That hasn't always been the case in the Big East.
Granted, if the Bulls lose one game...chances are they won't have the cache to hang with one-loss possibilities in LSU, Oklahoma or USC. Who cares? 11-1 will mean a BCS bowl of some kind. Before the season, anybody associated with USF would have grabbed that in a heartbeat. Let's not forget, USF's top players are sophomores. Al Keck
