Leavitt's Bulls will now be put to the test

Just arrived back in town from last night's USF/Rutgers game.  Understanding the disappointment Bulls fans are going through right now, that was one of the more entertaining football games of the season.

Let's put this game in perspective.  Rutgers knew they couldn't beat USF straight up playing a convention game, so they pulled out the old fake punt and fake field goal and converted both.  Those two plays resulted in 10 Rutgers points.  Those two plays were defining moments in the game.  To be hit once, shame on me.  To be hit twice, shame on you.

If you caught our pregame preview from Rutgers Stadium on Thursday at 5 and 6 on ABC Action News, one Rutgers fan I talked to said there would be a couple of surprises in store by his Scarlet Knights.  He got the information from a team source.  I didn't know this guy from Adam, but he turned out to be right.  He went on to say " the word is all over town, Rutgers will pull out secret weapons."

We all knew stopping Ray Rice was paramount.  USF couldn't, but then again what team in the Big East has stopped that Heisman hopeful.  He's a stud.

If there was a disappointing element to this night, it was after the game.  We were all informed that USF Quarterback Matt Grothe and Linebacker Ben Moffitt would not be attending the post-game news conference. They "went straight to the bus." is what we were told.  That was quite a shock, and I really don't know what to think of it.  Rutgers RB Ray Rice did that once, and the AD called him back and made him go up to the press box to talk to the reporters.  Frankly, what more could the two have said. However, both are stand up guys, and they were no-shows last night.  If your going to be leader, lead in defeat as well.  If the two were being attended to for injuries, I give them a pass.  If they weren't..............

I commend Trae Williams.  He was a great post-game interview.  He gave Rutgers their props, while feeling the pain of that loss.

But that night is history.  Conmnecticut is next on the road.  The Big East title is still there for the taking.  If you thought the Rutgers game was a barometer, double it next week against the Huskies. One more loss in the Big East and a title shot is likely out of the picture.

Two more notes:  I spent a portion of the game on the sidelines.  All I could hear from the Rutgers fans closest to the field was the chant to USF players:  "Overrated".  If the Bulls were overrated, why did you storm the field as if you won the national championship?  To the Scarlet Knights fans, nice win.  But you were darn lucky that game was in your stable.  Furthermore, it was an upset win.

Plus, the USF/U-Conn game will be televised on ABC/WFTS next Saturday at 3:30pm.

Nice read.

Good to see someone notice that Rutgers is emptying the shed against USF.
A fake field goal and a fake punt -- totally nuts.

And bot the fakes were PASSES.  That is what amazed me.  If they miss that fake field goal Schiano would have been hung from the Brooklyn Bridge.

RU was lucky?  USF in the second half was a mess.  Grothe was sacked like 5 or 6 times in the 2nd half and 7 for the entire game.  If not for Tim Brown's troubles on punt return the game is a wrap for RU.  That was the only was USF got into position to score the one TD to go up 17-10.  What exactly did USF do in the second half to say RU was lucky?  NOTHING!

Upset win?  Perhaps by rankings, but nothing more.  Maybe one should check out what ESPN said "hardly an upset..."  My question is where have all your fans been the past few years?  Even with big wins, USF could hardly fill up the stadium.  Maybe with time you will create a program, and have better fans.  As for the team, they deserved that loss after very sloppy play not only in this game, but WVU, FAU, etc...

Hey USF Bulloney.  Love your passion, but from standpoint, I don't care what the ESPN boys say.  Rutgers pulled out all the stops (gimmicks) to get that win.  Furthermore, I don't care if the USF fans think they got jobbed by the refs.  USF got beat on special teams, period.  They gave up 10 points on two gimmick plays successfully completed by Rutgers - a fake punt that set up a field goal, and fake field goal for a TD.  Kudos to Rutgers.  They tried it, completed both and won.
Who said "hardly an upset" from ESPN? I doubt it was Flutie, probably Fowler.  Schiano devised those gimmicks plays because he felt his team couldn't beat USF the conventional way.  But I will hand it to him, it did work.  Lucky, but good work.

I'm a Rutgers fan and I was at the game Thursday night.  I think you're being very hard on the USF team.  USF is a great team, they're having a great season, and they played their hearts out Thursday night in a very difficult environment.  I love your team and have enjoyed watching it have the break-through year like we did last year.  The national championship was probably an unrealistic dream for USF this year, like it was for us last year.  But you can still go 11-1, and, even if you don't win the conference, will still - I feel and hope - be invited to the Orange Bowl.  Should that all occur, and it must start next weekend in Connecticut, I hope that USF fans will travel to Miami by the tens of thousands and that your team will crush the ACC champion.

USF is a better team than Rutgers. Plain and simple. However, the better team doesn't always win...note all the other "upsets" this season, i.e. Colorado over Oklahoma, Stanford over USC...etc. The interesting thing here will be to see where the Bulls end up being ranked after this close loss Thursday. If you recall last week...USC lost to an unranked Stanford team and barely budged in the polls...dropping to 10th. NOBODY will argue that Stanford is better than Rutgers...who was also unranked when they beat a #2 team...but I'd be pretty surprised if USF is anywhere near #10 this week, where USC ended up. That reeks of unfairness. Does USC really scare voters enough that they should be grandfathered into the highest vacated spot when the next polls are released? I say USF falls to 15th.
