I took a lot of heat from Bulls fans earlier in the season when I wasn't ranking Jim Leavitt's team as high as the pollsters. But before the Rutgers game, I started thinking USF just might have something here. Their defense was stellar, their offense was better than average. Grothe was playing out his mind. I got sucked in!
Then came the Rutgers game. Jim Leavitt's team got fooled on a fake field goal, and the unbeaten roll was over. I said, okay, Rutgers got lucky.
This week, I thought, there is NO WAY U-Conn is as good as their record. USF will reload and take control of the Big East. Then they played the game. WOW! Are these the same guys that were ranked among the best in the nation? I know Jim Leavitt and his staff have to be furious at the mistakes, penalties, and missed opportunities against the Huskies.
No way should U-Conn have won that game! So where does this leave USF? Probably out of the Big East title picture. Definitely out of a BCS bowl. As for the rankings.....they'll likely fall between 20 and 25, and maybe, out of the top 25.
Right now, the Bulls should forget about where they were, and start looking at what they are. There's another regional TV matchup coming up next Saturday against Cincinnati on ABC (WFTS-TV) at 3:30. Can you say "MUST WIN." I'd say so.
