Eight games into the season and I swear Jeff Garcia looks a few inches shorter. Very understandable considering he's had to carry this Buccaneer franchise over the first half of the season.
We've seen that he is slippery in the pocket and he can deliver big plays. But Garcia can deliver big plays only when there is somebody at the other end of a big play. And right now, other than Joey Galloway, who is there?
Alstott.
Cadillac.
Pittman.
Clayton.
Alex Smith.
All Buccaneer starters. All offensive starters that have scored huge touchdowns as Buccaneers. All are fighting major injuries.
Here's the rub...Garcia has to be perfect for the Bucs to have any chance to win. But Garcia is so desperate to make something happen, he's going to take chances and he's eventually going to make mistakes.
Three interceptions in the loss to Jacksonville. This after 2 fumbles in last week's loss at Detroit.
Interceptions are not the end of the world. Joe Montana threw 136 in 15 seasons. But Montana had Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Brent Jones and Roger Craig around him to make plays to make up for earlier mistakes.
Garcia has Joey Galloway.
Injuries are not an excuse. They are a fact of life for the Buccaneers. But we need to remember that Tom Brady and Peyton Manning may be the only quarterbacks right now in the world that can consistently carry an offense with mediocre talent around them. Brett Favre did it in his day. And look what Brady has done with superior talent at wide receiver this season.
Jeff Garcia is lumped into the next group. Quarterbacks that can win. Quarterbacks that can throw key touchdown passes in any given moment. But over the course of an entire NFL season, Garcia -- and just about every other NFL quarterback -- can only do so much.
If Jeff Garcia were more, the San Francisco 49'ers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles would never have let him slip away.
