The Weight of the World on His Shoulders...

Eight games into the season and I swear Jeff Garcia looks a few inches shorter.  Very understandable considering he's had to carry this Buccaneer franchise over the first half of the season.

We've seen that he is slippery in the pocket and he can deliver big plays.  But Garcia can deliver big plays only when there is somebody at the other end of a big play.  And right now, other than Joey Galloway, who is there?

Alstott.

Cadillac.

Pittman.

Clayton.

Alex Smith.

All Buccaneer starters.  All offensive starters that have scored huge touchdowns as Buccaneers.  All are fighting major injuries.

Here's the rub...Garcia has to be perfect for the Bucs to have any chance to win.  But Garcia is so desperate to make something happen, he's going to take chances and he's eventually going to make mistakes.

Three interceptions in the loss to Jacksonville.  This after 2 fumbles in last week's loss at Detroit.

Interceptions are not the end of the world.  Joe Montana threw 136 in 15 seasons.  But Montana had Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Brent Jones and Roger Craig around him to make plays to make up for earlier mistakes.

Garcia has Joey Galloway.

Injuries are not an excuse.  They are a fact of life for the Buccaneers.  But we need to remember that Tom Brady and Peyton Manning may be the only quarterbacks right now in the world that can consistently carry an offense with mediocre talent around them.  Brett Favre did it in his day.  And look what Brady has done with superior talent at wide receiver this season.

Jeff Garcia is lumped into the next group.  Quarterbacks that can win.  Quarterbacks that can throw key touchdown passes in any given moment.  But over the course of an entire NFL season, Garcia -- and just about every other NFL quarterback -- can only do so much.

If Jeff Garcia were more, the San Francisco 49'ers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles would never have let him slip away.

There is a reason why Jeff Garcia is no longer with the Lions, 49ers, Eagles and Browns. They all recognized that he is nothing more than a second tier QB that scrambles way too early, forces too many errant passes, checks off too many plays, overthrows too many receivers, and judging by the fact that a couple of times yesterday he threw quick to receivers who didn't know they were getting the ball makes me think he doesn't remember the offense scheme when a check-off is called quickly. Jeff Garcia is a .500 QB that fits in with a .500 team nicely, but will not be the QB that takes the team to the house in January. Last year he was lucky with Philadelphia, but they were a more talented and injury free team than the Bucs are.

Elvis1, you don't know what you are talking about and clearly have not watched Garcia over his career.

With the 49s, they wanted him back as he had broken some Joe Montana and Steve Young records (touchdowns in a single year) with a team that was not very good- and they still are not a good team- but they could not afford him and were battling salary cap issues so they hesitantly let Garcia go.

The Browns were a terrible team who gave Garcia very little help. I've never seen so many easy-to-catch dropped passes by his "receivers" in my life. Detroit was also a terrible team and the 4 months Garcia there was clouded by his trying to come back to play to early from a broken leg. There were all kinds of issues in Detroit and the receivers never even bothered to learn their playbooks, watch film or practice the way Garcia was used to.

With the Eagles last year, Garcia finally showed what he could do with a so-so, and not a terrible team. Look at where the Eagles are this year-nowhere.  There are not an elite group. Same goes with Tampa Bay. This is not the greatest team but Garcia is making it all go as well as it does.

If you put Garcia in with Belichek or with the Colts and their talent, it would be lights out. I wonder what it would actually be like to have an offensive line who could pass block (Garcia's been running for his life the last few years and he makes very quick decisions) as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady never get touched and get five seconds to get virtually every pass off. What would it be like to have two or three great receivers instead of one if you are lucky? What would it be like to have a running game? What if he could be with a defense who created turnovers? What would it like to be with a team whose special teams created good field positon?

Garcia has to do everything to make it go and has never been with a team in the NFL who helps him at all. Give Garcia a few more good players, here and there and he'd be as good as Peyton Manning. As it is this year with a medicore team, his is a play or two a game away, plays that could be made by anyone on the team, from being 6 and 2 or 7 and 1.

That's how close the Bucs are this year and it's all because of Garcia. He's getting very little help and Peyton Manning would do no better with this lack of help.
