Passing Fancy

It is better to give, than receive.

The Bucs plan to call an audible on that famous saying.

They believe, it is better to give AND receive.

The Bucs would love to give Jeff Garcia more weapons at wide receiver and give opposing defenses more to ponder.

It was so obvious during the playoff loss to the Giants, that Garcia can’t do it by himself.  And Garcia can do only so much if Joey Galloway is hurting.  No secret that Galloway is the only dangerous option the Buccaneers have on offense.  His presence opens the Buccaneer run game or leaves another Buccaneer wide receiver in one-on-one coverage.

And with the Buccaneers some $23-million under the cap, job one will be to find a speedy bookend for Galloway.  The question is, are there possibilities in free agency?

Randy Moss is a free agent.  Any chance that he leaves the Patriots and Tom Brady for anyplace…let alone the Buccaneers?

The best possibilities from there appear to be Chicago’s Bernard Berrian and D.J. Hackett of Seattle.  Both are decent receivers.  But when you think about spending in free agency, are those players that can make a difference?

Berrian caught 71 passes for 961 yards and 5 touchdowns last season.  He has been a deep threat with the Bears.  It makes you wonder what he could do with a quarterback like Garcia.

Hackett has had success in a similar offense.  He has size and has been impressive after the catch.

Other names that may get attention, Devery Henderson of the Saints, the Cowboys’ Patrick Crayton, Arizona’s Bryant Johnson.  All are free agents for the taking.

Obviously, more receivers will become available after the draft when teams make more roster moves.  And there are always trades, but rest assured everybody wants a big play machine.  And nobody wants to be the team that gave up this year’s Moss.

And so many NFL teams have been burned by signing free agents to be No. 1 receivers.  Ask the Falcons.  How long have they been trying to find a consistent pass catcher?  Can you say Eric Moulds? And we all remember the Buccaneers’ version, Alvin Harper.

By the way, this not the first time the Buccaneers have felt the need to acquire for a big-name receiver.  They gave up a pair of first-round picks to get it done.  Was Keyshawn Johnson worth the $56-mill and the first rounders the Buccaneers had to give up to get him?

And keeping it in the family, there have been reports that Cincinnati may dangle Key’s cousin, Chad Johnson, as trade bait.  Johnson had 93 catches for 1,440 yards and 8 touchdowns last season.  He can be a big play waiting-to-happen.  But if Johnson was frustrated in Cincinnati with Carson Palmer at quarterback, what makes you think he’d ever be able to roll up those numbers with the Buccaneers?

Signing big money free agent wide receivers – or trading for them – makes me nervous.  For every Randy Moss or Terrell Owens, there is a Peerless Price out there.  Too many variables.  But when Moss or Owens have had success in changing teams, it is because they both joined teams with quality quarterbacks.

It may be that the next Buccaneer big-play receiver is on the roster now.  Will Michael Clayton ever return to form?  Will Maurice Stovall take advantage of his chance?  Will Paris Warren get healthy and play like he did last preseason?

Just because the Buccaneers have $23-mill to spend under the cap doesn’t mean they will spend the money wisely.  The Buccaneers have shown a history of finding quality defensive linemen and linebackers where other teams cannot.  Wide receivers are a different story.

Calvin Johnson was supposed to be the most dominating receiver to come out of the draft in years.  Yet Johnson had only one, 100-yard game.  And he caught only 4 touchdowns last season with the Lions.  Then again, that’s nothing new for the Lions…Charles Rogers, Mike Williams and Roy Williams have been their warmup act.

The Bucs are desperate for big plays.  Other than Joey Galloway’s 69-yarder, the Buccaneer leaders were Ike Hilliard with a 56-yard catch and Chad Lucas rolling up a 52-yard catch.

I don’t dare mention that the Buccaneers’ longest run was 31 yards by Luke McCown.

And you wonder why the Buccaneer offense floundered late?

If this were a baseball team, Brent Abernathy would be batting cleanup.

Having cap room is one thing.  Spending it wisely is another.

That 2002 season was the same regular season the Bucs won SB XXXVII. Sadly, both have lived up to the lofty expectations set that year.
Speaking of Abernathy, I WOULD like fries with that, thank you very much.
