It appears all Bucs Cornerback Brian Kelly needs to do is write a check for $480,000 and he's a free agent. As we told you last night on ABC Action News at 11, Kelly is ready to buy out the last year of his contract. Does this surprise me? No.
For the past two seasons, BK has been sidelined with various injuries, and frankly, his relationship with the team was becoming more disjointed as the days went by. It all started two years ago at training camp when Kelly was quoted as deserving a raise. When I brought up the issue with G-M Bruce Allen, he was obviously a bit taken back, and told me he had no knowledge of it. Kelly never got his raise......and you could tell he wasn't too happy with what unfolded.
There was even some talk that Kelly wasn't exactly in a rush to get back on the field when he was injured. Whatever the case was, the Bucs are losing a top notch corner. Phillip Buchanon won the position by default. In my estimation, Buchanon is adequate, but not in Kelly's league. So, right now, cornerback becomes a main focal point on the Bucs to-do list this off season. Losing Kelly, if this goes through, puts a big hole in the team's depth chart at that position. I wish BK well. He was always accomodating to me. A class guy.
