My, has Chris Rainey grown up, literally. I can remember him as a 5 foot nothing, 150 something pound speedster at Lakeland High. He still has that speed, and more pounds on that frame which weights in now at 177. Rainey says his goal is 182 lbs.
After watching Rainey in Saturday's annual Orange and Blue Spring game, he is, barring injury, Florida's #1 back in 2008. I was impressed with his patience, waiting for blocks to develop. Then the explosion to pick up yards. Talk about elusive, just ask fellow Lakeland teammate Ahmad Black, who got spun around by Rainey on a nifty move that sprung him for a TD.
I did think I'd say this, but he reminds of me of two former NFL running backs I had the pleasure of seeing first hand. One was former 49er/Nebraska RB Roger Craig in HS. The other, former Gator/Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith in college . Rainey has their intangibles, and don't be surprised what Mr. Rainey will do in his college career. My only question is his physical toughness. Time will tell as it always does.
Question for Urban Meyer? Why the @#$ did you play QB Tim Tebow when the kid spent the past three days sporting a 102 degree temp and the flu. (please insert answer here). Don't give me the excuse backup QB John Brantley was hurt and you didn't have another QB that knows what the heck he's doing.
Question for ESPN? Who paid who for this full-blown, nationally televised SPRING GAME! The whole College GameDay crew was there. I enjoyed it, as did the 61-thousand Florida fans who went to the game. This telecast alone should be worth one or two future Florida recruits next season. By the way, in attendance for the game: Plant QB Aaron Murray.
Gator's defense was better in the secondary, but the D-line needs to pick it up. It's the defense that will make this season or break hearts. Hope springs eternal.
