Since my talk with USF Head Coach Jim Leavitt two weeks prior to the Spring game, I wasn't surprised with Saturday's defense dominated Spring fling. In fact, I was pleased to see it. DE George Selvie is a true All-America. Three sacks in one half of work. D-Lineman Jarriett Buie had four sacks, Patrick Hampton three. However, on the other hand, something is lacking on the offensive side of the ball. With 10 returning starters, you would think they could have scored at least one touchdown.
To quote Coach from our conversation: "The team you see today is not the one you will see in the fall." My concern with USF will be depth. Development must take place in the summer.
As for FSU, it was purely the offense (Garnet) vs. Defense (Gold) up in Tally. Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach Jimbo Fisher was very pleased with the development of his two backup QB's, Christian Ponder and D'Vontrey Richardson.
But it was FSU's defense that rocked. 11 sacks, 14 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and two INT's. Either FSU's defense is that good, or their offense is way behind the curve. I will keep in mind that starting QB Drew Weatheford did not play. He had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee back in late March.
FSU player to watch: WR Taiwan Easterling. The redshirt freshman should be the go-to guy in a stable of WR's that apparently are having a hard time holding onto the football right now.
As Bobby Bowden said: "WE are a team of potential." Remember, potential is just another ways of saying- You haven't done it yet. The clock is ticking in Tallahassee. Fans are expecting more than the Music City Bowl. "No"le worry, right?
