Congratulations to Andrew Freidman, Evan Longoria, and the Rays organization. The new long-term agreement Evan agreed upon with the Rays is a win-win for both. Longornia gets a guaranteed $17.5M for six years. Should he live up to his potential, the Rays have two more options covering three more years that would earn Longoria a total of 44M.
In baseball money, it's a GREAT deal for the Rays. For baseball in general, it likely sent a few agents into a tizzy. The absence of blockbuster numbers in this deal will be shoved in their face by other owners.
I applaud Longoria. This is still alot of loot. He could have made more when he became free-agent eligibile. What he said today tells you the kind of player he is: "this is just a step into investing into the future Rays. No longer are they the Rays of old."
With all the off-season moves, pending the return of Matt Garza and Cliff Floyd, Friedman appears to be the front-runner right now as MLB Executive of the Year.
