If your reading this, I presume you are pondering the same question? Who will the Bucs draft #1, providing they have a #1 pick to choose with.
That all depends if a deal gets done with KC for Defensive End Jared Allen. It looks like the Minnesota Vikings have the upper hand in the Allen sweepstakes....
But, never underestimate Bucs GM Bruce Allen. He's done deals with Chiefs GM Carl Petterson before. Who says he can't pull this one off, if the Bucs are truely interested in the Chiefs sack specialist.
Nonetheless, we forge ahead to draft day. The Bucs have the 20th overall pick in the draft. This year's draft is loaded with cornerbacks and running backs. Bucs will select at least one from each position in the draft. What round remains to be seen.
What about WR? Providing they don't pull off a trade for an established NFL'er, like Cincinnati's Chad Johnson, they have a couple of B-plus grade wideouts to choose from.
If they go WR in round one, expect that WR to be a punt return specialist. That cuts the list down to Cal's DeSean Jackson, Houston's Donnie Avery, and Virginia Tech's Eddie Royal. They're all schrimps by NFL standards....all under 6-feet tall. Gruden likes size and speed. That would mean someone like Michigan State's Devin Thomas on the board.. Even a James Hardy from Indiana.
They could go after a RB. Yeh, I know, why the heck would they do that with Warrick Dunn in the fold now.....along with Graham, and Bennett.. Not counting on Cadillac Williams until I see him on the field getting hit. If they go after that RB, East Carolina's Chris Johnson could be the guy. He can fly and he can return kicks. Also has good hands.
How about a cornerback in Round 1. There's USF's Mike Jenkins.or Virginia Tech's Brandon Flowers. Both have speed, play physical and step into the Cover Two beautifully.
I have to go back to what Head Coach Jon Gruden said in his exit speech to the media following last season. He said they need to find someone who can put pressure on the QB, and a star-stud wide receiver.
Quarterback Jeff Garcia would love to see the later appear in Tampa, and so would Joey Galloway. I'm not giving up on Clayton, Stovall, Hilliard etal. They can play, but all will agree they do not remotely possess the speed and elusiveness the team needs at that position.
Depending on how the draft falls......I expect the Bucs to pick a WR in Rd 1. I'm just not sure right now who that receiver would be. Stay tuned.
