It's KIMBO-MANIA!!!!

Saturday night's Mixed Martial Arts network television debut has drawn mixed reviews.

I had never really seen any MMA fights but tuned in anyway to see what all the hype was about over Kimbo Slice.

Kimbo, a mountain with teeth, looked overmatched through the first two (lackluster) rounds against James Thompson. But in the third round, Kimbo blasted his opponent upside the 'ol coconut with a hard right hand, causing a river of blood to come spurting out of Thompson's head.

It was pretty barbaric. It was senseless violence. I wasted my time watching it.

But like a bad car accident, you couldn't look away. And unfortunately, MMA is here to stay.
Why? Because Elite XC's first ever nationally televised fight was a HUGE ratings success. Over 6 million people tuned in for nearly three hours of madness, culminating with the near de-throning of MMA's most marketable "athlete".

MMA experts will tell you that Saturday night's display was not a true representation of the sport but it doesn't matter. This country has an unquenchable blood lust that isn't going away. And as long as Kimbo keeps busting ears in the ring, look for a repeat performance at a TV near you very soon.

Typical!!! Another uninformed blogger.  It was a poor representation of the sport because it is not about the blood.  Just like Nascar should not be about the car wrecks.  It's about a mix of well rounded skills of various fighting arts.  The main event was a poor representation of an MMA fight because neither fighter demonstrated a set of diversified skills.

@Dave. I totally disagree. Maybe the hardcore MMA fans value "diversified skills" but I don't buy for one second that the ratings had anything to do with that. People just want to watch a butt kicking, plain and simple.

I mean, really?? Come on man.

A mix of well rounded skills of various fighting arts is noble, but won't draw in the crowds.    You have to throw in some bloody cheese to bring in the audience, then shore it up a bit later on once folk are hooked and a large repeat crowd established.

People might like to see blood, but after you've seen a few fights, you're going to want to see that the people who are making the blood spill are halfway decent fighters.  The Kimbo fight was terrible.  Anyone can pop an ear that was swelled like Thompson's was at the start of the fight.  I was amazed at how poorly Kimbo did in all aspects of the fight.  He even hit Thompson square in the face - and rocked him - but still couldn't finish it.  And boxing is supposed to be his strength.  He had maybe one more punch left at the end of this fight, and if it wasn't called when it was, he would have been completely gassed.  He could barely do a post-fight interview even after he lied down for several minutes after the fight.  There is plenty of blood in MMA fights where the fighters are skilled.  This fight had only blood - no skilled fighters.  What I especially didn't like about this fight was how fixed it appeared to be.  Any time Thompson had Kimbo down, the ref would tell the fighters that he was going to stand the two up if the action didn't pick up.  This is normal if, in fact, there is little action.  However, in this fight, the ref was saying this at times when Thompson was elbowing Kimbo in the head.  Plus, the stoppage was complete lunacy.  Thompson was in much better shape to continue the fight than Kimbo was, but because his ear popped, Kimbo was given the victory.  Crazy.

As in any sport, people watch for there own reasons... mma is no different. Some want blood, some want skill, some want a good story build up to the fight, others want all of those. As long as you watch, no one cares. so enjoy it for your reason... I REST MY CASE
