Here we are. Eighty-one games in the books. Halfway through the baseball season and it's almost surreal to think what I'm about to write. The Rays lead the AL EAST and carry the best record going in the American League.
Before the season started, I did say the Rays could be 500. Never did I think they would be where they are right now. What's the saying: "That's why they play the game."
Observations the first half of this season:
My blog two months ago about Andrew Friedman being "GM of the Year." is now a lock.
Joe Maddon may just end up AL Manager of the Year.
Evan Longoria, at this point, is a clear-cut leader for AL Rookie of the Year. He should be on this year's AL All-Star team, but will likely be passed up.
The Rays got where they are with tremendous defense, particularly in the infield. Pitching has been above average to excellent. Middle relief has been stellar, and Troy Percival has closed out 19 games this season.
I do have some concerns: One is Percy. I just hope he can hang on for the rest of the season. It's clear his hamstring is causing him pain, and has hampered his career long ability to pick his spots around the plate. Another concern is B.J. Upton. Tell me if I'm wrong but BJ has been less than stellar on the basepaths. He even looks like he's in a daze sometimes. Upton is a true athlete, but I sense something isn't right. I sure hope I'm wrong.
We have one month to go before the trade deadline. Who might the Rays dangle for maybe a starting pitcher or an insurance closer in case Percy's leg gives out.
Whatver happens from here on out. These past three months covering the Rays has been a blast. Boys, you've gotten this far, might as well stun the whole darn country!
