Jon Lester leaves with 2 out in the 6th. And the Rays did exactly what they had to against him. They jumped on him early and never let him off the hook. The Red Sox were forced to keep him in because their bullpen is dead tired.
It would have been nice to get another run or two off him, but let's not get greedy. Lester has been one of baseball's best pitchers for the last two months. And if the Rays hold on, this will hurt the Boston pitching staff more than any other starter getting shelled.
Meanwhile, Matt Garza has not only kept Boston off the scoreboard, but he has given the Rays bullpen much-needed rest. At times tonight, Garza's stuff has been electric. But we need to remember this is Fenway and 5-0 leads can disappear faster than bailout money.
Once again, BJ Upton with a 3-run homer and Evan Longoria with a solo shot.
5-0 Rays in the 6th.
By the way, the Red Sox Nation is getting frustration. Even a few scattered boos.
