Everything you expect from Andy Sonnanstine, he wasn't tonight.
Sonnanstine is known for throwing strikes and allowing his defense to make plays.
Instead, Sonnanstine constantly allowed the first batter of the inning to reach base ..and he was constantly having to pitch out of trouble.
Joe Maddon could see Sonnanstine did not have his command and he gets burned by leaving him in one hitter too long. Sonnanstine served up a 3-run homer to Ryan Howard and with the Rays' struggling offense, any kind of lead may be too big to overcome.
When the Phillies hit homers, they have runners on base.
When the Rays hit homers, the bases are empty.
The difference...patience. The Phillies are making the Rays pitch. The Rays are not making the Phillies pitch.
Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria were incredible in the ALCS. In the World Series, they haven't hit a loud foul ball. They are still oh-fers.
There is no sense of urgency for the Rays tonight. They can say that they've come back from bigger deficits all they want. Bottom line, the team that dominated the American East is about to stare at a 3-games-to-1 deficit.
