First of all, congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies. Well done. You beat a Tampa Bay Rays team that won the toughest division in baseball – the AL East.
Now, with that out the way, let get to what this blog is all about. If there was ever a time for MLB to rethink this 162 game schedule, now is the time. What we witnessed in this past World Series was disappointing, and here’s why. Two of the best teams from each division having the play this game in elements that, I believe, hampered some of the true abilities each team possessed. No way would a regular season game be played in those conditions we witnessed in Philly. I’m sure even the MLB moguls were shaking their heads.
What’s concerning is that the 2009 schedule has the World Series actually going into November! You’ve got to be kidding me. A dose of reality has to have set in here as MLB is just asking for an encore of deplorable playing conditions next season. I certainly hope that wisdom trumps greed here. There was a time that MLB was just fine with 154 games. Perhaps a permanent trip back to that era is in order. It’s the most logical scenario. I certainly won’t feel cheated if the schedule was reduced by eight games. I know the defense of all this is economics. More games, more gates receipts, etc. Sanity has to prevail here. I hope that in the upcoming baseball meetings, a logical decision is made to avoid penalizing two teams that make up baseball’s biggest showcase. Remember, as the saying goes, don’t fool with Mother Nature.
