It's been a painful month and change for Jim Leavitt's USF Bulls. I see the disbelief on the fans faces walking out Ray Jay. I see disappointment on the faces of USF players.
So, what's the underlying reason for this downward spiral? We got the answer Saturday from Head Coach Jim Leavitt. Injuries and lack of depth. Leavitt: "We are not the same team we were the first five games of the season." That was Leavitt's answer to a question on why the team is under-performing. I commend the reporter who finally asked what everyone wanted an answer to. I commend Jim Leavitt for answering it, truthfully.
You see, coaches don't ever want to make excuses on why their team isn't up to par. However, what Leavitt said yesterday was no excuse, it's just plain fact. A hard reality that can't be hidden anymore. These situations happen.
I can accept that answer. What Bulls fans can't accept, and certainly the Bulls coaching staff, is the tank job the team did in the second half Saturday against Rutgers. Leavitt will address that with impunity this week. Hopefully after the season, the staff will address a depth problem in recruiting.
I will say this. Thank goodness this wasn't an article about Florida State. Their lack of depth yesterday, and subsequent loss to Boston College at home, came in part because of stupidty. Five receivers, including Corey Surrency, didn't play. Why? Because they were involved in a mid-week fight with some fraternity guys. I don't know what started it, and I don't care. That was dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb!
What has happened to USF's team is simply unfortunate.
