Oh...how I want a playoff in major college football.
If you have any doubts about its success...just think of the way March Madness grips us every spring. And crank it up a few more levels because it is college football.
But take 8 teams...seed them...and let it play out. I guarantee it will be the most dramatic, unpredictable tournament we could ever imagine.
Lineup Alabama against Boise State. Are you 100 percent certain that 'Bama would handle the Broncos? Oklahoma can tell you what Boise can be like in one game.
College football still needs to combine the playoff with bowl games. Critics claim it would kill interest in bowl games. Outside of the BCS bowls, how many command national attention?
While I'm not wild about the current BCS system, we need to remember the purpose of the BCS poll. It is to set up a 1 versus 2 matchup after the conference championships. All this talk about Texas getting hosed by Oklahoma making the Big 12 title game and how could Oklahoma get in after losing to Texas head-to-head...really means nothing today.
Let's check out the final BCS matchup Sunday.
It always seems to workout.
Personally, I believe Southern Cal may be the most talented team in the country. I believe today that any matchup without the Trojans would not be a true championship game. But USC still has to get past UCLA.
And for proponents of a playoff...we are playing right into the hands of the BCS.
We are constantly talking about the ills of the BCS. The debate is the best PR for collge football out there. Every week we talk about the previous weekends results and how one school or another is getting overlooked.
That talk keeps college football on the top of the sports landscape even during baseball's World Series.
And after Sunday's bowl matchups, we'll beat them to death before the first BCS bowl kicks off.
Strap it on for the best time of year for college football.
