" My colleague, Al Keck, did a point-counter-point and dubbed me an "ignorant jockstrap."

Fact is folks, your likely out of your league to challenge me. I suggest you go to the Green Bay Press Gazette website and read an article entitled: "Reggie White's widow: Favre story sounds familiar."

This will require a little effort on your part, which most of you do little of in responding to these blogs. I will say this- she agrees with me. WHY? Because her husband went through the same thing. Very few of you know what it's like for these athletes who have little aptitude for anything but football. It's a shame really, but it's reality. Favre is one of them. Oh, he may find a hidden talent down the line, but right now he's scared to leave the game.

I'm not diminishing what Favre has done in his career. I'm just stating fact, and sometimes the facts aren't what you want to hear.

Now the real question? Will the Bucs trade for Favre? God help Allen and Gruden if they do. Favre will be useless in the offense until the 8th week of the season, which maybe by then, he'll actually absorb some of it. The move could cost them dearly at the end of the season.

On Jeff Garcia: Would Jeff Garcia have asked for permission to attend his dad's football reunion over this weekend if he had an extension? Heck no. He's got to be hacked off, disrespected. For Allen to have asked Chris Simms if Favre "would be able to fit into the offense with limited reps in the pre-season." is an ultimate slap in the face to Simms, Garcia, Griese and McCown. Why the heck would Allen ask Simms that question? How would Simms know, and why did Simms make that conversation public? Not the kind of stuff you want coming out two days before your team reports to camp. My guess is you have a quarterback corp a little on edge right now, if not downright PO'ed.

This whole situation could make for one very interesting open to camp. However, I think Favre will go to another team (Miami?), sell some tickets, and end up having the same disappointing comeback Reggie White had.

      Tom Korun

Finally, it's football time!

Football is back!

Before I get into this Bucs blog, let me just say THANK GOODNESS for the Rays'
success this season because if it wasn't for this team playing such great
baseball, the Bay Area would have been a VERY BORING place around here
sports-wise. Yeah we had the Final Four, but the Rays are a godsend.

Now to the celebration in Celebration...

The Bucs kick off Camp Gruden
this weekend. Coaches report on Thursday and the players show up on Friday. Al
Keck and Tom Korun will be live bringing you all the ins-and-outs from camp. Some
storylines to look out for:

1. Jeff Garcia still doesn't have a new contract. He wants one. Will he get
one? You have to imagine that Garcia's contract status will be question number
one for GM Bruce Allen Thursday when the coaches report, just like it was ALL offseason long. And there is word that
Garcia will be excused from the open of camp...no, he isn't holding out in
hopes of more money. He is attending a reunion for a community college he
played for and his dad coached at.

2. Training camp stinks for everybody but at least the veterans have been there
before. The rookies have NO IDEA what they are in for. The Bucs will be in camp
from July 24th to August 14th with a game at Miami
mixed in there on August 9th. This will be the most demanding stretch of
football these guys have ever played....how will Aqib Talib, Dexter Jackson,
Dre Moore, Geno Hayes and the rest of the newbies react? The ones that handle
the pressure the best tend to pan out on the field.

3. Michael Clayton and company need to step it up this season to get
some
pressure off of Joey Galloway. You saw what happened to the Bucs
offense when Gallaway
got hurt for the playoff game against the Giants. When the Bucs can't
stretch
the field with Gallaway, opposing defenses concentrate on shutting down
the
run, and I don't care if you put Emmitt Smith back there, nobody can
beat seven
in the box all by themselves. Who will step up? It's gotta be Ike
Hilliard or Maurice Stovall because you can't rely on Dexter Jackson as
a rookie. Maybe Paris Warren will bounce back from an awful ankle
injury he suffered last preseason against Houston.

This is an important camp for the Bucs. If they want to repeat as division champs, it's going to take some work.

New Orleans
is much better with the recent addition of Jeremy Shockey. Reggie Bush is still
lightning quick and Drew Brees is one of the best passers in the league. The
Bucs get a shot at the new look Saints in Week 1 on the road and then again at
home in Week 13.

The Panthers had a down year last year are still a team with talent on both
sides of the ball. Jake Delhomme's injury buried that team last season. Steve
Smith is a top-10 receiver in the NFL and Julius Peppers is a Pro Bowl force.
The Bucs get them in Weeks 6 and 14.

The Falcons are still in a tail-spin from the Michael Vick situation last
summer. They finished 4-12 last season and looked worse than that. Will they
win more than four this year? Unlikely with a rookie QB at the reins. Look for
the Bucs to romp the Falcons in Week 2 and 15.

Camp starts this week! Do you think the Bucs will win the division AGAIN this
year? Leave your comments and let us know what you think? How many wins will
the Bucs finish with this season?

My guess?

9-7 (3-3 vs NFC South)

>Bobby Lewis

A Bucs Favre-rite

Here's our best attempt at Point Counter Point.

And with apologies to 60 Minutes, here goes...

Tom...you ignorant jockstrap, how can the Buccaneers not leave every stone unturned to acquire one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history?

This not the case of Johnny Unitas or Joe Namath. They belched dust when they were traded.

This isn't even a Joe Montana leaving the Niners for Kansas City.

This is one of the NFL's top 5 quarterbacks joining a defending division champ that has a vastly improved offensive line.

This is a defending division champ that has a better run game than the Packers.

This is a defending division champ that has a defense that paired with an effective offense, can return to elite status.

And with the Super Bowl in their house this season, how can the Buccaneers NOT pull out all the stops to get Favre in Red and Pewter?

This has nothing to do with Jeff Garcia. This has everything to do with Favre.

Let's not forget Jon Gruden wanted to throw Garcia into a quarterback competition with Jake Plummer. Obviously, he'd roll the dice on Favre.

I know at 38, things can head south in a hurry.. But the Bucs are not asking him to carry this franchise. The Bucs simply want him to run the offense. Throw in his ability to make big plays and if Favre can be 75% of the quarterback he was last year, the Bucs may be the team to beat in the NFC.

I don't think it is a coincidence that the Buccaneers have held back cap room. Are you really surprised that the Bucs have been slow to extend Garcia's deal?

Jon Gruden has a ton of quarterbacks on his roster,

With Brett Favre he may finally have the right one.

((TK...sorry about the "ignorant jockstrap" remark, I've never considered you ignorant.))

    Al Keck

Relax Rays!!

The Rays hit the all-star break with a 7-game losing streak.

   So?!!

Let's not forget this 7-game losing streak followed a 7-game winning streak.

Last I checked, teams can't win division titles or earn playoff spots in mid-July. And despite what many believe, you can't lose division titles or playoff spot at that time either.

This is what baseball is. One 162-game chase. The playoffs and World Series follow. The best team in October wins.

Let's not forget that last season Boston opened the second half losing 5 of 8. Let's not forget Boston had 4-game losing streaks in late-August and mid-September. Yet Boston won enough to get in and won when it counted.

If somebody had told the Rays before the season, they'd be one-half game off the pace in the American East at the all-star break...they'd take it in a heart beat..any year!!

Championship teams struggle every year. Championship teams figure out their problems and win. If the Rays can do that, they can still win the division or earn a playoff spot. Once that happens, who knows what happens?

The Rays simply have not been hitting. Everybody is struggling. I find it hard to believe that Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, BJ Upton, Eric Hinske, Aki Iwamura are all going to continue their skid at the sametime.

And in reality, we have yet to see this lineup hit on all cylinders.

The key will be September. The Rays play 17 of their last 24 on the road. The Rays play their final 8 games away from the Trop. Until this 7-game losing streak, the Rays had shown they could win on the road. But what they have to do is learn how to win at Boston. They have to learn how to win in Anaheim. They have to learn how to win at Chicago.

Pro sports is all about getting to postseason. We saw the NFC Champion Buccaneers open the playoffs at home against the wildcard New York Giants. The Bucs were favorites. We all saw what happened.

  Enough said.

  Al Keck

So, the Rays have you flustered too?

What is going on!? The Rays dropped a 5 game division lead in a week! The hitting stinks! The pitching stinks! The fielding stinks!

Could the All-Star Break come at a better time for this team?

Maddon's bunch has hit a rough patch. It happens to everybody. It's the way you bounce back from trouble taht dictates how deep into the season you play...

...and I want to buy a ticket for a baseball game at the Trop in October. The Rays just had their worst week of the season. But the good news is, they can afford it.

After all that...Crawford going 0-for-23, the defense falling asleep and the Red Sox creeping up on them...the boys in blue are still only a 1/2 game behind Boston thanks to their electric start to the year.

This past week was tough but rest easy Tampa Bay. It's just a bump in the road, but these next four days off should be just the tonic the Rays need to make a playoff push in August.

And make sure your calendar is clear for the first week in October.

Here's my take. Favre wants his release from GB and come out of retirement for one year. Why. Because he didn't plan his life or prepare for life after football. We see this all the time, players who hang on so long because football is all they know what to do.

Certainly, Brett Favre doesn't need the money, does he? To me, it's a case of a guy who still thinks he's a legend in his own mind, but in reality, he's just bored and deep down, a little scared to leave the game.

If I was Packer management, the gloves come off now. The franchise has bent over backwards for Favre. Yes, he is their modern day legend, but like Wisconsin cheese, it starts to stink after a while. Get my drift. Packer fans should be peeved themselves. Now you Cheeseheads are seeing the real deal: It's all about Brett. It's all about getting that last $10 million dollar payday from some sucker franchise.

Packer management, make Favre go to the league and ask for reinstatement. Then dump him.

Closer to home, If I were Jon Gruden, I would be on the phone right now to Jeff Garcia clearing the air on this nonsense.

    Tom Korun

What's behind the Rays recent slump

I know. Your beginning to get those negative vibes since the Rays have lost four in a row. Here's the way I see it, and certainly invite your opinion.

Throughout this season, the Rays have found a way to brother-in-law their way to where they are. Pitching was sensational, with little to no help from the lineup. Or visa vera. Their defense has been absolutely spectaular at times, and at least on five or six occassions, won games. As of late, all the above components have hit a rough patch. Hey, it happens, even to the best of teams. However, I'm certain the Rays front office see what I've just brought to your attention, and will make adjustments accordingly before the July 31 trade deadline.

There was is one marketable missing element to this team that has helped this slump develop. That's losing Jason Bartlett to the DL. In the past two weeks, he was doing it all. And then bang, a slide into third puts him out for 15. Would Bartlett have thrown that errant ball to first that could have ended the Indians 5th inning? Instead of a 2-2 game, one run scored, and by the time the inning was over, five total runs.

As far as the lineup, heading into yesterday's loss to the Indians, the Rays were 2 for 28 with runners in scoring position. That is totally unacceptable, and needs to be addressed, and will be addressed.

Good news is, the All-Star break is coming. The Rays need it. Couldn't come at a better time Remember, no matter what happens before the break, the Rays will be in great postiion. They entered Cleveland against a team that was on a 10 game losing streak. Timing couldn't be worst. Law of averages says so.

So let's just take a deep breath. See what happens the rest of the Indians series, and then wait to see what moves the Rays make before the deadline, if they can afford to do it.

T-man was given his release by Joe Gibbs to pursue the free-agent market one year early. What was it, you didn't want to drive a Toyota? Not really. Evidentally, Stewart is salivating over opportunities to get a piece of the Haas-CNC Racing team. Who doesn't want to have their own umbrella. Can't fault anyone for dreaming, and one day making that reality. But Tony baby, you better make sure this ownership offer is a solid investment.

First of all, there's a reason why someone is willing to give up a piece of their action, and that reason usually carries baggage. Secondly, you would be jumping to this team without a sponsor. From what we hear, Home Depot is staying with JGR, and Joe is ready to put the 18-year old Joey Logano in the #20 driver's seat. Thirdly, your Crew Chief Greg Zipadelli is not expected to leave JGR and join you. What does that tell you. Fourth, I ask Tony this question: "Do you have the personality and people skills necesasry to be an owner?" Your an opinionated guy. Your a helluva driver, but tact is not your strong suit. You can wheel that owner thing in front of your team, and tell them this is the way I want it done. Soon enough, your going to be talking to yourself in the mirror, because your "team" is going to be looking at you through their rearview mirror.

Now for my biggest reason why you shouldn't do this deal. Gene Haas, owner of the two-car Haas-CNC team, is serving a two-year prison sentence for tax evasion! Neither of their cars are in the top 35, and the team was whacked by NASCAR for bringing illegal cars to a race at Lowe's!

Tony, if you put your money where your dreams are in this deal, you better start this team from scratch. And, you better find yourself an established driver out there to team with you on the track. Good luck in your decision. Timing is everything. Is this the right time? I think you can do better.

   Tom Korun

Will Dan Boyle put himself in play?

Lightning Defeseman Dan Boyle has cleared the air. Boyle now says he has been asked to waive his no trade clause by the Lightning. It now remains to be seen if Boyle will waive his no-trade clause. I think he eventually will.

TSN in Canada reports that "the Lightning are close to a deal with three teams, however as many as five teams are in the mix."

Boyle did sign a 6-year $40 million dollar extension in February just before the trade deadline. There is plenty of money there that would free up room to sign Vinny LeCavalier.

         Stay tuned.

Getting Ryan Malone to be the left wing for Steve Stamkos was a home run. Bringing teammate Gary Roberts in bolsters the third line, and a tremendous presence in the dressing room. GRADE: A

Brigning back Proposal ensures the first line intact. GRADE: A Now the Lightning ownership work on a long-term deal with LeCavalier, which they will. Owner Oren Koules told me so.

Briinging in Olie Kolzig as a tender to give Mike Smith a run was necessary. But don't count Karri Ramo out of the mix. GRADE: B+

Missing out on Rolston in the free-agent market, the Bolts reloaded and signed former Coyotes right wing Radim Vrbata. Vrbata should help the scoring potential of the second line along with Malone and Stamkos. GRADE: B

Add the resigning of Ryan Craig, the Bolts are a better team than they were a year ago, and it goes beyond paper. GRADE A-

However, you can't keep everyone and there will be trades made. The team would like to accumulate more draft picks for future years. Now we see who stays and who goes....

Here are a few names to keep an eye on: Andre Roy, Chris Gratton and Dan Boyle (if he waives his no-trade clause.)

Before the season started, I did say the Rays could be 500. Never did I think they would be where they are right now. What's the saying: "That's why they play the game."

Observations the first half of this season:

My blog two months ago about Andrew Friedman being "GM of the Year." is now a lock.

Joe Maddon may just end up AL Manager of the Year.

Evan Longoria, at this point, is a clear-cut leader for AL Rookie of the Year. He should be on this year's AL All-Star team, but will likely be passed up.

The Rays got where they are with tremendous defense, particularly in the infield. Pitching has been above average to excellent. Middle relief has been stellar, and Troy Percival has closed out 19 games this season.

I do have some concerns: One is Percy. I just hope he can hang on for the rest of the season. It's clear his hamstring is causing him pain, and has hampered his career long ability to pick his spots around the plate. Another concern is B.J. Upton. Tell me if I'm wrong but BJ has been less than stellar on the basepaths. He even looks like he's in a daze sometimes. Upton is a true athlete, but I sense something isn't right. I sure hope I'm wrong.

We have one month to go before the trade deadline. Who might the Rays dangle for maybe a starting pitcher or an insurance closer in case Percy's leg gives out.

Whatver happens from here on out. These past three months covering the Rays has been a blast. Boys, you've gotten this far, might as well stun the whole darn country!

LIGHTNING ACQUIRE RIGHTS TO RYAN MALONE, GARY ROBERTS

TAMPA BAY SENDS CONDITIONAL DRAFT PICK TO PITTSBURGH

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired the rights to left wings Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts from Pittsburgh in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2009, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced. Should the Lightning sign Malone, Pittsburgh will receive Tampa Bay’s third-round pick in 2009 or they will receive Dallas’ fourth-round pick in 2009, previously acquired by the Lightning, if Tampa Bay is not able to sign Malone.

"We said earlier this week we would be aggressive in our pursuit of free agents in order to win and compete," Koules said. "This trade today doesn’t guarantee anything, but we believe it gives us a leg up in our attempt to sign these two impact players."

Malone, a 6-foot-4, 224-pound Pittsburgh native, played in 77 games with the Penguins last season and recorded 27 goals with 51 points. He also appeared in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games in 2008 and tied for eighth in league scoring with six goals and 16 points as he helped Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup Finals. Malone set career highs for goals, assists, points, power-play goals (11) and game-winning goals (6) in 2007-08. He led the team in game-winning goals, ranked fourth in goals and third in power-play goals, while also ranking fourth among Penguin forwards in average ice time with 19:04.

The 27-year-old has played in 299 career NHL games, all with the Penguins, and amassed 87 goals, 169 points, 27 power-play goals, 11 shorthanded goals and 11 game-winning goals. Malone scored at least 20 goals in three of four NHL seasons.

Roberts, a 20-year NHL veteran and former Stanley Cup Champion, played in 38 games with Pittsburgh last season. The three-time NHL All-Star recorded three goals and 15 points with 40 penalty minutes, and also played in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games recording two goals and four points.

A 6-2, 215-pound native of North York, Ontario, Roberts is a veteran of 1,194 career games with Calgary, Carolina, Toronto, Florida and Pittsburgh. He has amassed 434 career goals, 903 points, 107 power play goals and 51 game-winning goals. He has broken the 20-goal barrier in 16 of his 20 seasons, including two 30-goal seasons, two 40-goal seasons and a 50-goal season. Roberts, 42, has played in 130 career playoff games, recording 32 goals and 93 points. He recorded 12 points in 22 playoff games as he helped the Calgary Flames capture the 1989 Stanley Cup title.

NFL Commissioner blasts rookie contracts

I applaud NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for ripping the latest round of idiotic contracts being offered to untested rookies.

Goodell zeroed in on the ridiculous money given to Michigan tackle Jake Long as the first overall pick of the Dolphins. Total tally 5-year 57.75 million with 30M guaranteed.

What boggles my mind is why did it take so long for an NFL Commissioner to publicly bring this point out. Maybe it's timing. Certainly posturing as Goodell opens negotiations with the players union on a new labor deal

First of all, no rookie should ever receive a contract with a guarantee attached to it from the get-go. That right should be " a kick-in clause" or come after two-three years of service.

Goodell is a practical and well polished executive who gets it. Frankly, I think he's expressed the sentiment of veteran players all through the league. The " rookie salary" issue should be a slam-dunk in favor of the owners. From there, it will be a crap-shoot.

Keep in mind, labor peace will remain status quo through 2011. However, if a new deal is not signed by March 2009, there will be changes in the NFL salary cap and contract signings.

Goodell also acknowledged the owners messed up when they signed the last collective bargaining agreement. Economics has taken a downturn. New stadiums have no chance of flying at this point.

Still, ticket prices keep going up. It will be interesting to see if any Bucs home games don't sell out. A very wealthy man once told me, "you get greedy, you get needy." Everything has a threshold. Even the NFL.

    Tom Korun

It's time to tell it like I see it, and you may not like it!

Now that I have your attention, let's get on with it. I am sick and tired of this area's weak psyche everytime a sports franchise is looking for new digs. IE: the Rays.

Now that the Rays have pulled out of their proposed sight in downtown St. Pete, people are talking a possible move out of Tampa Bay, like Vegas or Charlotte. Not a majority of people, but enought to get the conversation out in the public domain. Listen in. It is high time you "doom and gloom" thinkers remember you now live in a major market! No longer is this area retirement central. Start thinking like winners!

The Rays are not going to move out this area. They will find a suitable site, a referendum will pass, and that will be that. All of you who think that a locally based franchise is in jeopardy of moving out of the area must think the TB area isn't worth having a franchise in the first place. If you think that way, hit the road!

However, there is a glaring deficiency in the entire TB community that needs work. Bringing in new business! I'm not talking about the little guys, I'm talking about mid-major to major players in industry.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but what major industry has come into this area and made it it's SE headquarters in the last five years? Every single city that makes up this TB area has done a poor job of wooing new business. I just came back on a flight from Chicago. I sat next to one person from Kansas City, the other from San Francisco. Both were amazed at the beauty of the area when flying in over Old Tampa Bay. The quality of life here is remarkable, and severly underrated by the yahoos who make up the national lists.

But they are right when it comes to stagnant business growth. All you Committee's of 100 around the area better start throttling down on the socials and actually do something! For those of you that want to keep this area the bedroom community you enjoyed growing up, good luck.

Just as much as I love my hometown of Chicago, TB is now my home, as it has been since 1986. Things change, and that can certainly be said of the TB area. When I first moved here, the city of Tampa looked like a city block in Chicago. Downtown was dead. St. Pete, to put it right out there, was very unappealing. Now look at these two cities! Tampa actually has people living downtown. St. Pete is doing an awesome job of building up the infrastructure around the water and quite a few blocks inland. It's too bad they are seperated by geography and government. If the two were to pull their resources together, there is no question this area would become the predominant area in all of the Southeast.

In closing, I think we live in a strong area, one that still hasn't reached it's full potential. Maybe it's high time everyone takes a page out of the Rays book on attitude. Bust through that "comfort zone" and find a higher ground. See what its done for that franchise. Imagine what that kind of thinkng will do for this entire area? Refuse to lose! Instead of believing it can't be done, find a way to get it done!

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

All of you Hillsborough County
baseball "fans" who are still whining about the TAMPA
BAY Rays playing games in St.
Pete, stop wasting your time complaining!

All that belly-aching isn't going to do a darn thing. In case you haven't taken
a look at the name on the side of Tropicana Field lately, it still says TAMPA
BAY Rays....not Tampa Rays. So stop
your whimpering.

Some of you "fans" say you'll start going to games if the team moves
to Tampa. If they were really
"fans", you would already be going to games in St. Pete. Tell me,
would you abandon your precious Buccaneers if they played in St. Pete? I think
not.

The bottom line is that location doesn't matter! WAKE UP! This team is for
real! Tampa has the Bucs, the Storm
and the Lightning. St. Pete has the Rays. It should stay that way.

And as far the stadium not being as accessible in St. Pete as it would be next
to Ray Jay (as was suggested Wednesday night's show at 11 by a few "fans")
is a crock. You are from the highway to your seat in 15 minutes
once you get down to your exit. Give me a break.

Whether the team eventually gets that new stadium on the waterfront doesn't
matter. The TAMPA BAY
Rays aren't moving to Tampa. Not
anytime soon. Not ever. The Trop is booked until 2027 with the Rays as its tenants.
So stop whining, Hillsborough. Embrace a team that is FINALLY doing something
worth cheering for. Use that time on that drive over the bridge to think about how foolish you all sound.
